Additional Information

Nancy Ann TARVIN:

Notes:

My GG Grandfather George W. Bankester married Nancy Ann Tarvin on 29 Sep 1833. She listed herself as a Conway because she had been raised by her Uncle Henry Conway. She had a sister named Mary Ellen Tarvin. - Sam Bankester

The Conway family was in Baldwin County at the close of the Revolutionary War. Charles Patrick Conway, Sr. and Henry Conway had large Spanish Land Grants of 640 acres each on the river just north of Blakely. They were in South Carolina during the Revolutionary War but they had relative in the Mississippi Territory before this. William Conway married Nancy Tarvin, daughter of Dick Tarvin and his wife Nancy, an Indian Girl. The Henry Conway family claimed Nancy Tarvin as their ancestors. Charles Conway, Sr., Dick Tarvin and William Tarvin were killed by the Indian uprising in 1813. Their ancestors, Sir Edwin Conway, a Knight and Captain Thomas Conway, a Knight, arrived with the 2nd Charter of Companies of Adventures and Planters in Virginia on May 23, 1609. They became wealthy and respected land owners there and married into other wealthy families. Edwin Conway's great-granddaughter, Eleanor Rose Conway became the mother of United States President James Madison. The Charles Conway Sr. who came to Baldwin County named his first daughter Eleanor. She married George W. Wilkins of Blakely. The result of correspondence between cousins, Charles Conway and James Madison, that gave the name to the little Indian boy the Howells found during the Creek Indian War. President Madison named him George Washington Bankester. George Bankester married Nancy Ann Conway in 1833. She called him a "Red Stick Indian." It was their daughter Corean Bankester who was mother of Charlie Head, and she later married her first cousin Samuel E. Conway who had a homestead two miles west of Stapleton. - courtesy of Rick Watts
