History of the Pamela Hartt Quilt of 1846

It is a signature quilt constructed by a ladies' quilting society whose members were spread over N.B., Prince Edwards Island, Nova Scotia.  It was made in 1846, as a farewell to Amelia (Pamela Jane) Hartt, wife of Thomas Warne.   She was the daughter of Henry Allain and Deborah (Ring) Hartt of Fredericton. The quilt moved with the family to St. Louis, Missouri, Alabama and now is in New York City.

I have a very good feeling about sharing the quilt with you for your reunion.  I found that damn thing in a trunk in the basement of my mother's house.  It was "her heirloom" and I was forbidden to take it!  (this was 25 year ago; of course, I took the old mildewy thing!)  It is a living testament to the fortitude of human friendship, and I think today my mom is happy I "rescued" it.  It means a great deal to me, but not enough for me to selfishly hoard it!

I doubt it was ever used.  I had it restored at the Anderson House in Washington, D.C. by a very kind and generous lady who oversees art restoration at that lovely mansion/museum.

Also, I think I'd like to leave the quilt to a museum in the area (Fredericton) in which it was created when I am finished with it.

"When friend from friend is parting
And in each spreading eye;

How could we bear the heavy load
of such heart agony?
Could we not cast it all, our God,
Our gracious God on thee?

--Mrs. Whitfield Hartt"

"Oh may the path of life for thee
Will wear a normal smile
Thy hope thy sweet companion be
And Friendship, Love and Sympathy
Thy happy hours beguile.

--Frances Hartt"

"When the far blue mountain
And the sea's [ loams ] are o'er
In our eternal home
Part we no more!

--J. Hartt"

"At morning's dawn at eventide
When nature smiles in glee--
And happy visions of thee glide,
Dear Mary, then remember me.

--Pamela J. Hartt"

"The summer past with all its beauties fair,
But not with it our kind and mutual love
For it was bound as if by magic charms
And seemed as if descended from above
Alas brief is life, we but a friend can tell
And then we are forced to bid that friend
farewell

--Mary E. Hartt"

"Alas! that pang will e severe
Which bids us part t meet no more.
Which tears me far from one so dear,
Departing for a distant shore

--Albina M. Hartt
Fredericton
August 20th 1846"
