GLENN, Robert Lee, GLENN, banker, real estate broker, and promoter of waterpower and water transportation on the Tennessee River, was born February 2, 1864, in Florence, Lauderdale County, and died at that place January 27, 1916; son of Walter and Eliza (Butler) Glenn, the former a native and life time resident of Florence, who taught in the city schools there, entered the Confederate Army, April, 1861, as commissary sergeant in Co, K. 7th Alabama Infantry regiment, was captured in 1843 and held at the Federal prison at Rock Island, IL until 1865; grandson of Walter and Nancy Agnes (Meltride) Glenn, the former a merchant and planter, a native of Ireland who migrated to America in 1800, located in Allegheny County, Borough of Pittsburg, Pa., where be married, in 1800, and with bis wife moved to Florence, Ala, in 1824, there bought property and located a home that still remains in the family, and of William and Elite (Lee) Butler, of Rogersville, Lauderdale County, the latter a native of Virginia. Mr. Glenn received his preparatory education In the city schools of Florence, and later attended Weslcyn college, now the State normal school of that place. His first business experience was that of a traveling salesman. Later he became a real estate broker in Florence and throughout Lauderdale County. In 1906, he organized the Alabama trust and savings bank, of which he was president until his death. He was also the southern representative of the Bank of America of New York City. With his ever growing influence and increasing means, Mr. Glenn centered his energies upon tbe material and civic advancement of his town end section. He was a consistent advocate of the development of tbe Tennessee River, both as to its water power and navigation, and throughout his entire business career urged both local and national support of this project. He was a Democrat and in 1912, was sent by his party as a delegate to the national convention that met in Baltimore. His Interest in education was deep and as a trustee of the State board of normal schools, be lent valuable counsel to the welfare and development of the teacher-training system of the commonwealth. He was also a director of the Alabama Presbyterian college for boys, at Anniston. With a full appreciation of his ability as a military adviser, he was appointed, as a member of their staffs, by both Gov. Emmet O'Neal and Gov. Charles Henderson. He was a Presbyterian: a Mason; Knight of Pythias; and an Elk. Married: September 7, 1893 at Monroe, La to Mamie Cecelia, daughter of Timothy and Joe Anna Hayes of that place. Children; 1. Robert Lee, lawyer, Florence; 2, Walter H., Insurance and real estate, Florence; 3. J. Hayes, student; 4. Cecelia, student. Last residence: Florence.

GREEN, Allen Turner, the junior partner of the firm of Osborn & Green, conducting a dry goods business in Lawrenceburg, is well known as a successful and capable young merchant of the city. His birth occurred in Lauderdale county, Alabama, on the 25th of January, 1894, his parents being William Henry and Matilda (Caldona) Green, who were born in the years 1851 and 1860, respectively. The paternal grandfather was Leonard Green of North Carolina, while the maternal grandparents of Allen T. Green were William and Mary Jane (Spinger) Caldona of Alabama. The father of Mr. Green of this review was a farmer by occupation and passed away in 1907, one year prior to the demise of his wife, which occurred in 1908. In the acquirement of his education Allen T. Green attended the public schools of his native county and when a young man of twenty years came to Tennessee, locating at Lawrenceburg, where he was made assistant cashier of the Lawrence Bank & Trust Company. He continued in that position for five years, most efficiently discharging his duties, but in 1921 embarked in business on his own account as junior partner in the firm of Osborn & Green for the conduct of a dry goods store. They have already developed a business of extensive and gratifying proportions, carrying a large and well selected stock of goods and being widely recognized as enterprising and progressive merchants of thorough reliability. In December, 1917, Mr. Green enlisted in the United States army at Nashville and was sent to Norfolk, Virginia, where he remained until honorably discharged a year later in December, 1918, at which time he returned to Lawrenceburg. On the 21st of February, 1919, at Nashville, Tennessee, Mr. Green was united [p.357] in marriage to Miss Margaret Edwards, a daughter of Phil and Margaret Edwards, both of whom were natives of this state. Mr. and Mrs. Green have become parents of a daughter, Elizabeth Allen, who was born on the 26th of December, 1920. In politics Mr. Green is a democrat, while his religious faith is indicated by his membership in the Methodist church, in which he is serving as steward. A young man of laudable ambition and unquestioned ability, he has already won a creditable position in mercantile circles of his adopted city and his many friends feel that his career will be one of continued success.
