JUSTICE JOHN McKINLEY FEDERAL BUILDING
Named for Alabama's first United States Supreme Court Justice, John McKinley made his home in Florence, Alabama, from about 1821 to 1842. Born May 1, 1780, in Culpepper County, Virginia, he dies July 19, 1852, and is buried in Louisville, Kentucky. McKinley was an early settler of Huntsville, Alabama, and resided in the Howard Weeden Home. As a member of the Cypress Land Company, he was one of the seven founders of Florence in 1818. McKinley helped establish one of Florence's first schools and its first church, First Presbyterian Church.

Purchase of a site for post office
and courthouse authorised and $7,500 appropriated for the purpose March 1, 1903; erection of a building to cost
$5O,000 autborlied. and $25,000 appropriated to begin the work, June 30, 1906. By act of March 4, 1907, the
sale of a part of the site was authorised.
Limit of cost of building was raised to $70,000. June 25, 1916. Additional appropriations as follows:
March 4. 1907. $25,000; March 4, 1911. $30,000; August 24, 1912, $10,000; June 25, 1913. $30,000. An
irregularly shaped lot, 160 x 297 feet, fronting
on Mobile, Seminary and Tombigbee Streets,
acquired April 13, 1904. A strip off ths east
side of this lot. 100 feet long and 10 feet
wide, waa sold to the Elk Club under authorization given May 30, 190S. The building was
occupied during 1913.
