JAMES ALTON CAGLE , 84, of Rogersville, Ala., died Sunday, June 21, 2009, at Athens-Limestone Hospital. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. today at Spry Funeral Home, Athens, Ala. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at Spry Funeral Home chapel, Athens, with burial in Civitan Cemetery, Rogersville, Ala. Steve Klein and Bill Hall are officiating. Mr. Cagle was preceded in death by parents, Alton James and Vela O’Vina Moody Cagle; sister, Mildred Cagle Blackburn; brother, E.F. Cagle; sister-in-law, Willie T. Cagle; brother-in-law, William Howard Garrett; and son-in-law, Danny Bishop McWilliams Sr. Mr. Cagle was a member of the Army Air Force and a veteran of World War II, serving on Tinian Island in the Pacific. He was deployed overseas, where he worked as an electrician on B-29 aircraft. He retired from Redstone Arsenal after 20 years. A salesman at heart, he most loved selling cars. He owned and operated Rogersville Motors for many years. Committed to community service all of his life, Mr. Cagle was a former member of the Rogersville Town Council and a former member of Muscle Shoals Regional Library. Mr. Cagle was a lifelong member and former elder of New Georgia Church of Christ. He loved his church family with all of his heart, where he oversaw multiple building projects as the church continued to grow. Helping his church was his first priority in his service to the Lord. The legacy of his life will truly be the eternal influence that he had over his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of who attend church. Mr. Cagle’s deepest commitment, however, was to his family. He was most proud of his wife of 65 years. He was a devoted, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Through his love and guidance, all of his children and grandchildren have graduated from college and have happy families of their own. He led his family with love, integrity and high expectations, and instilled in us a strong work ethic and discipline. Because he taught us all to love God with all our hears, we know we will see him again. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Willa Jean Johnson Cagle, Rogersville; daughters, Carolyn C. Akers and husband, William T., Florence, Ala., Cathryn Joyce Cagle and husband, Ray Joe, Rogersville, Ala., Marilyn C. WALTER H. CAMPBELL , age 94, of Decatur, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2008, at Decatur General Hospital. Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008, at Peck Funeral Home Chapel, with Samuel Hester and Bruce Blankenship officiating. Burial will follow in Hartselle City Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Campbell was born Sept. 9, 1914, in Colbert County, to Alford Campbell and Eva Stovall Campbell. He was a graduate of Leighton High School. He was a former member and deacon of Hartselle Church of Christ and also attended East Colbert Church of Christ and River Road Church of Christ. He also filled in for churches in Lawrence and Morgan counties needing a minister. He served in World War II with the U.S. Army for five years in the South Pacific. He received a Bronze Star, Silver Star and two Purple Hearts. He retired from the Soil Conservation Service with 27 years of service. After retirement, he started Heritage House Woodcrafting and later co-owned C&C Woodworks. Mr. Campbell was preceded in death by his wife, Louise H. Campbell. Also preceded by an infant daughter and three sisters, Terry, Melba Willis and Maebell Amos. Survivors include one daughter, Beth Moore, of Decatur; one brother, Frank Campbell, of Hatton; two sisters, Frances Patterson, of Florence, and Martha Cartee, of Leighton; three grandchildren, Blake Moore, Rachel Moore and Allison Prater; and two great-grandchildren, Aleia Prater and Tristan Moore.

BETTY J. (STEVENSON) CANERDAY , age 80, of Florence, died Friday, January 2, 2009. The graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 4, 2009, at Tri-Cities Memorial Gardens. Matt Heupel will officiate. The family will receive friends from 1-1:45 p.m. at Elkins Funeral Home on Sunday. Mrs. Canerday was a member of the Woodlawn Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clifford and Pauline Stevenson, and by her husband, Willie Carrol Canerday, in 2006. She is survived by her children, Jerry Crunk, of Florence, Teresa Danley and husband, Flynt, of Florence, Sandra Treadway, of Winchester, Tenn., and Steve Canerday, of Tuscumbia; grandchildren, Tara Mefford and husband, Chuck, of Florence, and Caroline Crunk, of Huntsville; brothers and sisters, Virginia Lovell, of Florence, Jim Stevenson and wife, Gail, of Florence, Faye Stevenson, of Florence, Neal Counce and husband, Carl, of Florence, Linda Jeffreys and husband, Steve, of Tuscumbia, and Ann Bevis, of Florence; special friends, Mario Dozal and Tony Ward; and many nieces and nephews. MAUDE MOVALINE (POWERS) CANERDAY - Funeral for Maude Movaline Powers Canerday, 95, of Decatur will be Thursday, Aug. 21, 2008, at 1 p.m. at Shelton Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Ben Hayes and Wayne Baggett officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Florence City Cemetery. Mrs. Canerday, who died Monday, Aug. 18, 2008, at her daughter's residence, was born March 14, 1913, in Lawrence County, Tenn., to Lonnie Powers and Bertha Hensley Powers. Originally a native of Florence, Mrs. Canerday had been a member of Woodmont Baptist Church in Florence since May 19, 1968. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Her husband, James E. Canerday Sr., preceded her in death. She is survived by one son, Dr. James E. Canerday Jr. of Florence; one daughter, Peggy Hairrell, and her husband, Snooky, of Decatur; one sister, Rachel Tidwell of St. Joseph, Tenn.; five grand-children; 10 great-grandchildren; and four great-greatgrandchildren. Pallbearers will be great-grandsons, Lee Clark, Joe Sloan, Justin Hairrell, Drew Sloan, Elliott Canerday and Judson Roberts. “The service for Mrs. Elizabeth LaNeave Cannon, 74, Route 10, Florence, will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Liberty Baptist with David Taylor and William E. Poe officiating. Burial will be in Wesley Chapel Cemetery, Morrison-Elkins Funeral Home, Florence, directing. The body will remain at the funeral home until one hour before the service when it will be taken to the church. Friends may visit the funeral home 6-9 tonight. She died Wednesday at her residence. She was a native of Trigg County, KY, but resided most of her life in Florence. She was wife of the late Sam Cannon and a member of Liberty Baptist Church. Survivors include six daughters, Mrs. Roberta Bevis, Nina Rhodes, Mrs. Jean Phillips, all of Florence, Mrs. Virginia Brown, Brewton, Mrs. Mary Olive, Birmingham. GEORGE HOUSTON CARROLL SR. , age 71, died Tuesday, March 17, 1998, after an extended illness. Visitation will be Thursday, March 19, 1998, 5-9 p.m. at Elkins Funeral Home, Florence, Ala. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 20, 1998, 3 p.m. at Faith Tabernacle with burial in Tri-Cities Memorial Gardens. Officiating will be Rev. Henry Melton. The casket will not be placed in the church one hour before the service as previously stated. Mr. Carroll was a dedicated husband and father for 49 years. He was the owner and CEO of two national contracting companies, United Gunite Construction, Inc. based in Irvington, N.J. and Pressure Concrete, Inc., based in Florence, Ala. These companies completed numerous projects in more than 40 states. Mr. Carroll was dedicated to making life better for all people he worked with. He served his country in the Navy in WWII. In 1949, he married Virginia Sego and had four children. He worked several years in the gunite and shotcrete construction industry and eventually became a manager. Then, in 1974, he started his own company, United Gunite Construction, Inc. In 1993 he purchased Pressure Concrete, Inc., and became a predominate leader in the shotcrete and gunite industry. Also, Mr. Carroll was a board member for IAE (International American Education and Indian American education). He funded the James Goosetree Scholarship Fund at the University of Alabama and was a member of Tide Pride. He was awarded for being the leader of one of the “Future 50” businesses in Nashville, Tenn., and was elected to the Who’s Who registry for Business Leaders Nationwide. Mr. Carroll was personally requested to assist in the reconstruction of the Statue of Liberty and dedicated much time and effort to all Americans in completing his portion of this project. Mr. Carroll loved his family, his employees and his country. He will be missed greatly by all. He was preceded in death by his father, Tom Carroll; wife, Virginia S. Carroll; son, George H. Carroll Jr.; sister, Geneva McClain; and brother, Thomas Carroll. He is survived by his daughter, Judy Carroll Bullington and husband, Joe S. GEORGE HOUSTON CARROLL JR. , 42, of Route 10, Florence, died on Friday after a sudden illness in Irvington, N.J. Mr. Carroll was a native of Lauderdale County, a graduate of Bradshaw High School, and attended UNA. He was a member of Faith Tabernacle Church and was vice president of United Gunite Construction and Pressure Concrete Co. Mr. Carroll is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Olivia Allison McKinney, Florence; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Carroll Sr., Florence; sister, Mrs. Judy Bullington, Tuscumbia; brothers; William Steve Carroll, Irvington, David Blain Carroll, Atlanta, Ga., grandmother, Mrs. Jeanett Carroll, Florence; several nieces and nephews. McKINLEY E.CARROLL , 61, of Florence, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 2008. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008, at St. John Primitive Baptist Church, Florence, with burial in Tri-Cities Memorial Gardens. Saints Funeral Home, of Sheffield, is directing. Officiating will be Pastor Bennie Cole. Popcorn was born Dec. 4, 1947, from the union of Albert and Hattie Butler Carroll. He departed this life Dec. 25, 2008, at his home. He attended Shiloh School and later transferred to West End High School, graduating from the class of 1966. He was an all-star player and helped lead the "Mighty Trojans" to several victories in basketball and football. He loved West End, "The Big Maroon and White." After graduation, he began his career at Phillips Dodge, which later became Nichols Wire Inc., Florence. He retired from Nichols Wire after 35 years of service. He loved sports and was well known in the sports community. Moreover, he formed several men's and women's softball teams. He was known for hitting the long ball "out of the park." He umpired softball and was a basketball official for Quad Cities. He was also an Alabama high school official. He was an avid fisher and hunter and loved his beagles. He loved his family. Popcorn was well loved by anyone who knew him. He leaves to cherish his memory a loving and devoted wife, Marilyn D. Carroll; nine sons, Demetrice Carroll, Darrious Carroll, Michael (Audrey) Johnson, Lamont Ross, Donald M. (Tewana) Carroll, Derrick Peters, Marcus (Kristi) Byrd, Desmond Peters and Byron Jones; five daughters, Diane C. (Alex) Rowell, Dedra C. EDNA (SMITH) CATHEY , age 92, of Florence, passed away Monday at the home of her daughter in Huntsville. LOLA FAYE (POUNDS) CAVER , 87, of Florence, Ala., died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, after a brief illness. She was born in Prentiss County to the late Eldon and Nina Pounds. She was a member of Jackson Heights Church of Christ, where she performed numerous acts of service for over 35 years. Services were Tuesday, Dec. 18, at 11 a.m. at Jackson Heights Church with Brian Jarrett, Ronnie Pannell and Willie Hamblin officiating. Burial was in the Tri-Cities Memorial Gardens. Greenview Funeral Home of Florence was in charge of arrangements. She is survived by three daughters, Dot Bishop of Russellville, Ala., Betty and Willie Hamblin of Florence, Glenda and Ed Foust of Florence; three sisters, Erlene Thompson of Lorain, Ohio, Mary Crabb and Charles, Virginia Goddard and Smith, all of Booneville; grandchildren, Ralph Bishop Jr. and Betsy, Chris Bishop and Leta, Monica Ross and Greg, Ginger McGuire, Kevin Foust and Jeanie and Rachel Foust; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Caver, a son-in-law, Ralph Bishop; a grandson, Todd Foust; her brother, James Thurmon Pounds; and a sister, Lorene Eaton. ROY LEE CAVER , 83, of Florence, Ala., died Sunday, March 15, 1998, at his home after an extended illness. Funeral services were Wednesday, March 18, at 2 p.m. at Jackson Heights Church of Christ in Florence with Brian Jarrett, Ronnie Pannell and Willie Hamblen officiating. Burial was in Tri Cities Memorial Gardens. Greenview Funeral Home of Florence was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Caver was born in Prentiss County to Ed and Ella Caver and grew up here. He married Lola Pounds, daughter of the late Eldon and Nina Pounds and has many relatives in Booneville. He was a member of Jackson Heights Church of Christ where he served as an elder for 35 years. He had taught an adult Sunday School class since 1965. He participated in numerous mission efforts and led the visitation program. He had previously served as an elder at Westside Church of Christ, Sheffield, for seven years. He was retired from Texaco Inc., after 36 years of service. He owned and operated Caver's Grocery in Tuscumbia from 1945-1952. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lola Pounds Caver of Florence; daughters and sons-in-law, Dot and Ralph Bishop of Russellville, Betty and Willie Hamblen and Glenda and Ed Foust, all of Florence; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were Ralph Bishop Jr., Chris Bishop, Kevin Foust, Todd Foust, Greg Ross and Russell Thorne. Honorary pallbearers were elders and deacons of Jackson Heights Church of Christ, Dr. Felix Morris and Dr. Tim Ashley.

ANNIE ELAINE (FORSYTHE) CLEMMONS , of Florence, passed away quietly March 12 at ECM Hospital after a brief illness. She was born Sept. 13, 1918, the youngest daughter of Bennie and Lula Forsythe and was a lifelong resident of Lauderdale County. She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Ethel English, Birdie Michael, Idell Cooper; and three brothers, Willie Forsythe, Emory Forsythe and Edward Forsythe. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, James Reeder Clemmons; and two sons, Jimmy Clemmons (Glyndell) and Bobby Clemmons (Frances). She leaves five grandsons, Jim Clemmons (Kathy), Jeff Clemmons (Kristi), Matthew Clemmons, Michael Clemmons and Drew Clemmons (Allison). She also leaves five great-grandchildren, Katie Clemmons, Maggie Clemmons, Mattie Clemmons, Jacob Clemmons and Sydney Clemmons. She is also survived by special nieces and nephews. She pledged her life to Christ at an early age and was a member of Sherrod Avenue Church of Christ in Florence for more than 50 years. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the staffs at Mitchell-Hollingsworth and ECM Hospital as well as Dr. Danny McFall for all the special love and care given to her during her illness. JIMMY D. COKER of Killen, Ala., passed away Monday, June 29, 2009, at St. Vincent's East Hospital after an extended illness. He was a native and lifelong resident of Lauderdale County. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at Greenview Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 2, 2009, at Mars Hill Church of Christ, with Jack Wilhelm and Patrick McRight officiating. Burial will follow in Tri-Cities Memorial Gardens. He will be placed in the church at 9:30 a.m. Thursday. Mr. Coker was a member of Mars Hill Church of Christ, where he served as both deacon and elder in past years. Mr. Coker received his Bachelor's Degree in electrical engineering from the University of Alabama in 1969. He spent most of his career working at Reynolds Metals. He will be remembered as a patient, talented engineer who was always willing to help others. Mr. Coker was a son of Jim and Tamsie Coker. He was preceded in death by his parents, his two brothers, J.T. Coker and Terry Neal Coker, and one nephew, Aaron Allen. He is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years, Sharon McRight Coker; his precious children, of whom he was so proud: a daughter, Dr. Tamsie Coker-Rogers (Troy), and a son, Dr. Matthew Coker (Nicole); one grandson, Evan Matthew Coker, who was the light of his life; one brother, Wayne Coker ( Jewell); one sister, Minerva Allen (Henry D.) ; two sisters-in-laws, Doris King Coker (J.T.) and Jewell Clayton Coker (Neal); and a host of beloved nieces and nephews. Mr. Coker is also survived by his much-loved mother-in-law, Hope McRight, and three brothers-in-law, Stephen McRight, Tom McRight (Beth) and Conrad McRight (Glenna). Mr. Coker touched the lives of countless others during his life. He was happiest when helping others, from helping teenagers with difficult mathematics homework to helping friends with a myriad of problems. From carpentry to electrical work, he was proficient in all endeavors. Pallbearers will be nephews, Barry Coker, Dr. Brad Coker, Rex Coker, Mickey Coker, Wade Coker, Greg Coker, Patrick McRight, Josh McRight, Martin McRight and Dare McRight. MATHEW CONLEY - United States Marine Corps. Killed in action in Al-Anbar Province, Iraq. Hometown: Greenhill, Lauderdale County, Alabama. Conley graduated from Rogers High School in 2002, where he was quarterback of the football team. He was a squad leader for the 37th Weaponry Division of the U.S. Marine Corps, stationed at 29 Palms, Calif., and had been in Iraq since September 2005. He was scheduled to leave Iraq on March 6 and was to be home on March 22.

ELLA MYRTLE (NEWTON) COX - was born 27, 1894, in Alabama the daughter of Will and Mattie Roberts Newton. She was united in marriage to James L. Cox who preceded her in death. Mrs. Cox lived most all her life in the Walnut Grove Community. She was a Missionary Baptist.. Mrs. Cox departed this life September 3, 1975, at Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital, Florence, Alabama, at the age of 80 years, 9 months and 6 days. Mrs. Cox is survived by three sons, Ben Cox, Jessie Cox and Robert Cox all of Savannah, Tennessee; six daughters, Mrs. Gertie Williams, Plant City, Fla., Mrs. Ida Stricklin, Adamsville, Tenn., Mrs. Willie Brannon, Lutts, Tennessee, Mrs. Martha Goodman, Mrs. Madgalene Daniels and Mrs. Rachel Winston all of Savannah, Tennessee; one brother, Mr. Bob Newton, Tampa, Florida; 41 grandchildren.

WILLIE JAMES CRAWLEY - Visitation for Mr. Willie James Crawley, 73, Muscle Shoals, will be Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at Thompson and Son Funeral Home, Tuscumbia, Ala. The funeral will be at noon Thursday at Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church, Muscle Shoals, Ala., with Dr. George Granville officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Leighton, Ala. William James Crawley answered the master's call on Sunday, Oct. 14, at Medical Center Shoals. He was born on March 18, 1934, in Leighton, Ala., to Russell and Martha Crawley. Willie confessed his faith in Christ as a child at the Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church of Leighton, Ala., where he remained a member until his health failed him. Willie was the last survivor of the Original Mount Pleasant Male Chorus that was dear to him. Willie retired from Robbins Rubber and Tire Company in Tuscumbia. Willie enjoyed gardening and cooking for family gatherings. EDGAR LOUIS CRIDER - 67, Rt. 12, Florence, died at the Colonial Manor Hospital Thursday night after an extended illness. He was a lifelong resident of Lauderdale County, a member of the Oak Grove Pentecostal Church, and a retired employee of Southern Tire Company with 17 years of service. The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at the Oak Grove Pentacostal Church, with Sam Young and Lelland Horton officiating. Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery, Spry Funeral Home of Sheffield directing. The body will remain in the funeral home until one hour prior to the service when it will be placed in the church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Francis Crider, Florence; sons, E.J. and Donald Crider, both of Florence; daughter, Mrs. Myra Cagle, Rt. 12, Florence; brothers, Marvin and James Crider, both of Iuka, Miss., Richard Crider, Rt. 20, Florence; sisters, Mrs. Fanny Woods, Rt. 4, Florence, Mrs. Edith Lambert, Burnsville, Miss.; five grandchildren. SHERRY (DRATZ) PULPEPPER - age 65, of Florence, passed away Friday, June 6, 2008. Sherry loved working in her flower garden and playing with her granddaughter. She had a close relationship with her lord and savior. Sherry was preceded in death by her parents, John and Marjorie Dratz. Sherry is survived by her husband of 47 years, Mickey Culpepper; daughters, Kim Holt and husband, Mike, of Muscle Shoals, and Robin Clark, of Florence; sister, Debbie Kilbourn and husband, John, of Huntsville; special granddaughter, Margaret-Anne Clark. Pallbearers will be Al Ford, Reeder Kimbrough, Jerry Shaw, Bob Kephart, Bob Simmons and Ellis Hornbuckle.

MATTIE A. CURRENS - Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Exposition Park Presbyterian Church for Mrs. Mattie A. Currens, 72, a resident of Dallas for half a century. The Rev. R. N. Benton will officiate. Mrs. Currens died Wednesday at her home, 101 South Beckley. She was born in Lauderdale County AL and in 1892 was married to Willis A. Currens, who died nine years ago. Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. L.J. McDonald and Mrs. R.A. Cooper, and a son, H. Olen Currens, all of Dallas; three sisters, Mrs. Cora Lee Richards of Wichita KS; Mrs. L.W. Garreston and Mrs. W.J. Abner, both of Dallas and a brother D.A. Rogers of Houston. Pallbearers will be W.R. Currens, J.L. Currens, H.D. Currens, Dale Currens, R.R. Black and Fred Newman.

TISHIA LEE (CARSON) CURRY , was born July 22, 1888, in Lauderdale County Alabama, the daughter of James Polk and Isbelle Waites Carson. Mrs. Curry was united in marriage to Thomas Walter Curry, who preceded her in death September 30, 1963. She was a Baptist. Mrs. Curry lived most of her life in the Waterloo, Alabama area of Lauderdale County. She departed this life February 8, 1975, at the age of 86 years, 6 months and 16 days. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Grady Lard, Sr., Savannah, Mrs. McKinley Lard, Savannah, Mrs. Jesse Haynes, Ft. Myers, Fla., Mrs. Travis Frederick, Haleyville, Ala. Three sons, Mr. Vernon Curry and Mr. Paul Curry, Florence, Ala.; 27 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren.”
