PROMINENT MAN DROWNED – George C. King, of Marion, Loses His Life at Pike’s Ferry

Selma, Ala. – GEORGE C. KING, a prominent young man of Marion, was drowned at Pike’s Ferry, on the Cahaba River, Sunday. He was en route from Marion to Summerfield. His aunt, Miss JANNETTE STURDIVANT, was in the buggy with hi. The boy in charge of the ferry allowed the rope to slip from his hands. The swift current carried the flat down the stream.
KING grabbed the chain and jumped to the bank to secure it, but tripped and fell.
His head struck the boat and he rolled beneath it. The horses became unruly, but the lady held on to them. She saw King rise at the turn as the boat passed rapidly away. She called to him, but no response came.

The body was recovered a mile below. The funeral occurred at Marion Monday morning. The business houses closed, and the Circuit court adjourned during the services. The town is in grief. Deceased was the son of CHARLES KING. His mother is prostrated and in a serious condition.
