BIG FIRE AT EPES.
Business Portion of the Town Almost Swept Away.
Livingston. January 30.--(Special.)--The business portion of the town of Epese situated on the Alabama Great Southern railroad, in Sumter county, was entirely wiped out by fire Sunday morning between 1 and 2 o'clock. The losses were as follows:
Dr. J. D. Henagan, $500; no insurance.
E. Levi, $600; no insurance.
F. Bowden, $1,000; no insurance.
Dr. J. H. Reed, drug store, $500; no insurance.
The next store was B. C. Lawler, who saved most of his goods. M. H. Levi lost two large stores, valed at $3,000; no insurance.
A vacant storehouse belonging to P. L. Smith, loss $3,000; covered by insurance.
B. J. Levy saved the most of his goods.
R. G. Cathey store and goods almost a total loss.
Eleven buildings were burned, entailing a loss of about $25,000, with only $3,000 insurance, covered by T. L. Smith.
The fire started in Bowden's store and burned the entire town in an hour and twenty minutes. Only two stores are left and they are on the west side of the railroad. It is believed that the fire caught from a stove.Source: Age-Herald, January 31, 1899, Transcribed by C. Anthony
