Phoenix was the first ship built in Russian America at Voskresenskaia Gavan(modern-day Seward). Builder was an
Englishman, Lt. James Shields, in Russian service wholost his life in the wreck. Vessel lost with all hands (90)
in storm SE. of Kodiak. Wreckcaused great hardship in Russian America due to the loss of badly needed supplies.

Ketchikan newspaper reported in 1915 that a Capt. J.E. Sayles,local marine man, was outfitting an expedition to
go to Kruzof Island to strip the wreckof the Neva. Associated with him in the salvage effort was C.F. Stager, a
deep sea diver.The Neva was reported to have carried a number of bronze guns, and a cargo of gold churchvestments.
Capt. Sayles was said to have received permission from the Russian Governmentto make the salvage effort. |

The Growler sailed from Victoria in the spring of 1868 on a trading voyage to Sitka.The vessel while running at
night probably missed the entrance to Clarence Strait and ranonto rocks at or near Cape Chacon. Wreckage and bodies
of the crew washed ashore on the south end of Prince of Wales Island. It was reported that all survivors were slain
by Haida Indians. |

Vessel ran into gale and both masts had to be cut away to save it. On Nov. 22, vesseldrifted into Dry Bay, went
ashore, and wrecked. Crewmen found canoes at a deserted Tlingit village, loaded trade goods and furs into canoes,
and paddled W. to another Tlingit village, arriving on Dec. 7. Tlingits confiscated their goods but took care of
crew and in the spring took them to Cross Sound. On June 23, 1869, 3 crewmen arrived in Sitka after being given
up for lost. |

1878." was discovered in the hands of Natives on the N. coast of the Chukchi Peninsula by A.E. Nordenskiold,captain
of the Vega, when his expedition overwintered in the area in 1878-79. |
