28 AA St. Alexander 1/1/1799 between Alaska and Siberia Wrecked with cargo of furs; there were no survivors.   Okhotsk, Russia  
724 K Phoenix 5/24/1799 wreckage washed ashore on Shuyak Island and later on Tugidak and Sitkinak Islands Phoenix was the first ship built in Russian America at Voskresenskaia Gavan(modern-day Seward). Builder was an Englishman, Lt. James Shields, in Russian service wholost his life in the wreck. Vessel lost with all hands (90) in storm SE. of Kodiak. 639 GACI Neva 1/9/1813 Neva Bay, Kruzof Island, N. of Cape Edgecumbe Struck a rock and wrecked; 36 died in raging surf and 24 survived. Survivors reachedSitka in a Kolosh canoe. A Ketchikan newspaper reported in 1915 that a Capt. J.E. Sayles,local marine man, was outfitting an expedition to go to Kruzof Island to strip the wreckof the Neva. Associated with him in the salvage effort was C.F. Stager, a deep sea diver.The Neva was reported to have carried a number of bronze guns, and a cargo of gold churchvestments. Capt. 308 GACI Borneo 1/28/1819 near Kaigahnee Wrecked in a gale. Officers and mess taken onboard the ship Volunteer after escaping from Haida Indians and making their way to Kaigahnee. Cargo of furs lost. 709 H Louisiana 7/9/1865 between S. side of Choris Peninsula and Chamisso Island, Kotzebue Sound Fleeing the rampage of the Shenandoah, the Louisiana withdrew along with the bark Martha, the Eliza Williams, and the Oliver Crocker for Kotzebue Sound. On the way into the sound, the Louisiana ran aground on a shoal. Boat burned on July 13 and sank the next day.Wreck seen onshore for the next 10 years. New Bedford Apr. 25, 1864 whaling in Arctic 297

138 GACI Growler 3/1/1868 Cape Chacon, Dixon Entrance, S. tip of Prince of Wales Island The Growler sailed from Victoria in the spring of 1868 on a trading voyage to Sitka.The vessel while running at night probably missed the entrance to Clarence Strait and ranonto rocks at or near Cape Chacon. Wreckage and bodies of the crew washed ashore on the south end of Prince of Wales Island. It was reported that all survivors were slain by Haida Indians. Victoria, BC Mar. 19, 1868 Sitka 48.5

227 GACI Louisa Downes 11/22/1868 Dry Bay Vessel ran into gale and both masts had to be cut away to save it. On Nov. 22, vesseldrifted into Dry Bay, went ashore, and wrecked. Crewmen found canoes at a deserted Tlingit village, loaded trade goods and furs into canoes, and paddled W. to another Tlingit village, arriving on Dec. 7. Tlingits confiscated their goods but took care of crew and in the spring took them to Cross Sound. On June 23, 1869, 3 crewmen arrived in Sitka after being given up for lost.
