An important p o and trading station on the Yukon River at the mouth of the Tanana River, about 720 miles nw of Dawson, 200 nw of Fairbanks and 900 miles ne of St Michaels. This post was formerly called Weare. Is the landing for all steamers on the Yukon and Tanana Rivers. The U S post nearby is called Ft Gibbon. There are usually stationed here a battalion of infantry and a couple of companies of the U S signal corps. It is the detail headquarters from whence are equipped all the stations of the U S military telegraph and cable service. There is a wireless station at this point and supplies are distributed from here to all the signal stations of Alaska. Has an Episcopal and Catholic Mission, Express, Wells Fargo.
