Local Boy Is Honored By Navy
Edward W. Belden, son of Mrs. Ruth Ogle of this city, was recently cited by his commander in the Navy for exceptional conduct at Pearl Harbor.
Young Belden, a graduate of the DeWitt High School, enlisted in the Navy four years ago and has a fine record.
When the boy's mother was told Saturday night of her son's recognition, she was overjoyed. She said that was the first she had heard from him for a long while.

Ralph Graves gets Promotion; Private Ralph A. Graves son of Mrs. Mary W Graves of Stuttgart was recently promoted to the grade of corporal at the Air Corps Technical School, Keesler Field, Miss.

Humphrey Boy is Pearl Harbor Victim
The War Department issed its first casualty list Sunday night under the war news policy, disclosing Army casualties in the Pearl Harbor attack of December 7. The report was that 226 were killed and 396 wounded.
First Sergeant Herbert B. Martin, son of Mrs. Lila Martin of Humphrey, Ark., was among those listed as dead.
This was the only Arkansas county boy's name in the list.
There was no idication as to when the Navy Department would issue its first casualty list.

Goes Right on Up in Army
Sergeant Frank L. McGraw, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter McGraw of DeWitt, is another of the county’s up and going boys in the Army.
He enlisted in the regular Army in February, 1940 and was placed in training at Camp Robinson. He took part in the Arkansas-Texas-Louisiana maneuvers in 1941 and afterward was sent to Fort Mead. Later he was transferred to Fort Riley, Kan., where he entered the officers training school.
McGraw married, also while there. He became corporal after the maneuvers last year and was recently promoted to the rank of sergeant. He is in the cavalry.
Mr. and Mrs. McGraw have another son, Tracy McGraw, in the army in Alaska.

Miss O’Dell gets Appointment
Miss Mildred O’Dell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.M. O’Dell who reside north of Dewitt, this week received an appointment for Naval Reserve service in nursing.

Kenneth Purcell, Seaman 2nd class, U. S. Navy, who is the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. chas. Purcell, has satisfactorily completed the prescribed course of study at the Class A Service Schools, U.S. N, T.S., Great Lakes, Ill., at the Ford Motor Co., Dearhorn, Michigan. He enlisted in Little Rock August 12th, 1941, and is 18 years of age. His older brother, Luther, has been with the Navy __ eleven years and is now in active service in foreign waters.
