JEAN STELL CAHILL,
82, of Pine Bluff died Friday, January 21, 2000, at the Davis Life Care
Center in Pine Bluff. Born October 3, 1917, in the Promise Land
community outside Hamburg to the late David E. and Johnnie Mae Smith
Stell, she received her education in Hamburg and graduated from Hamburg
High School. She worked 27 years as a clerk for Good Grocery Company
which later became Good Home Center and also at J. C. Penny as an
alternation lady until she retired in 1985. A member of the Immanuel
Baptist Church and the Ruth Sunday School Class, she was preceded in
death by her husband, Ira Dave Cahill; a sister, Frances Stell Kelley;
and a brother, John D. Stell.
Survivors include a son, Ira Don Cahill of Sherrill; three sisters,
Celeste Fairweather of Davenport, Iowa, Carrie Austin of Monticello and
Betty Donaldson of Crossett; two grandsons, David and Doug Cahill, both
of Morrilton; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, January 22, in the chapel
of Ralph Robinson and Son with Rev. Houston Austin officiating. Burial
followed services at the Memorial Park Cemetery. --Ashley

HAMBURG, AR--
MAXINE PIERCE CARPENTER,
75, of Hamburg died Wednesday, January 19, 2000, at the Methodist
Nursing Home in Fort Smith. A native of Forrest City, she lived in
Hamburg for over 45 years and had lived in Greenwood for the past
two-and-a-half years. She retired from the Ashley County Library in
1996 after 27 years, and she was a faithful member and Sunday School
teacher at the First Baptist Church of Hamburg until the past year,
when she was a member of the First Baptist Church of Greenwood. She was
preceded in death by an infant daughter, Sara Carpenter; her parents,
Clarence and Thelma Thompson Pierce; a twin sister, Mildred Narrell;
and a brother, C. R. Pierce.
Survivors are two sons, David Carpenter and wife Marilyn of Ladelle and
Steve Carpenter of Monroe, LA; a daughter, Claire McCants and husband
Art of Greenwood; a sister, Helen Jacks of Camden; a sister-in-law,
Archie Pierce of Asheville, NC; four grandsons, Shane and Marcus
Carpenter and Will and John David McCants; and a great-grandson, Ryan
Carpenter.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 22, in the First
Baptist Church of Hamburg with Dr. Bobby Pennington, Rev. Klois Hargis
and Rev. Ronnie Deal officiating. Pallbearers were grandsons Shane and
Marcus Carpenter, Will and John David McCants and nephews Jay Westbrook
and Lee Narrell.
Burial followed services at the Hamburg Cemetery, directed by Jones

CROSSETT, ARK--
GEORGIA LEE CARTER, 70, of Crossett died Wednesday, December 29, 1999, at the
Ashley County Medical Center. Born May 26, 1929, to Robert Rastus and Cora
Elizabeth Watt Johnson in Ashley County, she was a homemaker and a member of the
West Crossett Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband of 52
years, William J. Carter of Crossett; a son, William Earl Carter of Crossett;
two daughters, Katie Flowers of Montgomery, AL, and Sherri Lee of Crossett; four
brothers, Wilton Johnson of San Antonio, TX, Scott Johnson of Crossett, Sonny
Johnson of Hamburg and Billy Johnson of Crossett; five sisters, Verdell Moore of
Monroe, LA, Lula Jean Ballard, Tina Burt, Norma Hamm and Sally Tomlin, all of
Crossett; ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services
were at 2 p.m. Friday, December 31, in the West Crossett Missionary Baptist
Church with Revs. Thad Douglass and John Marlar officiating. Pallbearers were
Joey Rogers, Tracy Carter, Glenn Michael Carter, Tim Ballard, Glenn Moore, Bruce
Moore and Ron Tucker. Honorary pallbearers were her remaining nephews. Burial
followed services at the Carlock Cemetery, directed by Jones Funeral Home of

HAMBURG, AR--
MR.
UDELL A. CHADWICK, 80, of Hamburg died Sunday, March 5,
2000, at the Ashley County Medical Center. A native of Crossett and a
resident of the Shiloh community outside Hamburg for the past 40 years,
he was a retired farmer and an U. S. Army veteran of World War II and
the Korean Conflict. He was a member and Sunday School teacher, and for
many years, directed the Sunday School at the Shiloh Baptist Church. He
was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Katty Reid Chadwick; a
grandson, Bryan Bain Chadwick; a brother, T. B. Chadwick; and a sister,
Betty Chavis.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Gwen McDougald Chadwick of
Hamburg; two sons, Max Chadwick and wife Sandy of Hamburg and Dennis
Chadwick and wife June of Crossett; a sister, Jeanell Emory of Hamburg;
five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and
eleven step-great-great grandchildren.
Visitation will be after 8 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Funeral services
were planned for 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 8, in the Shiloh Baptist
Church with Revs. Jimmy Bates, Mike Titsworth and Ed Gulledge
officiating. Pallbearers will be Jim Stephenson, Roger Chavis, Marion
and Hershel Kelley, Chad Higginbotham and Mark McDougald. Honorary
pallbearers will be Dean, Wayne, Charles and Bobby Chadwick, Roger,
Norwood and Ronnie McDougald, Downey Bowden, Royce, Wesley and Mike
Harville, and Richie and Freddie Emory. Burial will follow services at
the Flat Creek Cemetery, directed by Jones Funeral Home of Hamburg.

BERDIE
BENJAMIN CLARK, 84, of Crossett died Friday, March 17,
2000, at the Ashley County Medical Center. Born July 8, 1915, to Arthur
and Ethel Aultman Clark, he was a self-employed welder, a charter
member of the Crossett Riding Club, and a member of the Beulahland
Assembly of God. He loved hunting and sports.
Survivors include his wife, Lois Clark of Crossett; a son, Arthur Fay
Clark of Felsenthal; two sisters, Dean Maheras of Napa Valley, CA, and
Dorothy Childers of Crossett; four grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 19, in the Jones Funeral
Home chapel in Crossett with Tommy Kimbel officiating. Pallbearers were
Richard and Tab Childers, Jamie Poole, Allen Clark, Keith Forrest, Lee
Allen and Joe Bolin. Burial followed services at Pinewood Memorial

JANICE
YENNI CLARK, 89, of Crossett, widow of Ellis William
Clark, died Thursday, March 16, 2000, after a long illness. A retired
journalist who had written for three state and two local papers, she
preserved many of her stories in the Paul Sullins Library in Crossett.
Her articles included in-depth histories of first schools, churches,
businesses and accounts of the times by early settlers of the area. She
was a devoted artist and a member of the American Watercolor Society.
Survivors include a daughter, Anne Truitt Newton of Decatur, AL; a son,
Ellis Banks Clark of Hobe Sound, FL; a brother, Donald Yenni of Ann
Arbor, MI; two sisters, Julia Hikes of Cambridge, MA, and Hallie Brown
of Pensacola, FL: three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 19, in the sanctuary of
the First United Methodist Church of Crossett with Rev. Larry Williams
and Robert Fisher officiating. Pallbearers were Mike Webb, James Cosby,
Bruce DeLess, James Tarver, Edward Holt and James Manning. Burial
followed services at the Crossroads Cemetery, directed by Jones Funeral

CARL RAY COLLINS,
51, of Crossett died Friday, January 21, 2000, at the Ashley County
Medical Center. A native of the Promise Land community outside Hamburg
and a former Hamburg resident, he had lived in Crossett since 1991. An
U. S. Army veteran of the Vietnam era, he was a truck driver and a
Baptist and was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Mildred
Elton Collins; a sister, Shirley Collins Harper; and two brothers,
Jerry Wayne and Travis Collins.
Survivors include his fiancee, Glenda Maxwell; a son, Chris Collins;
two daughters, Dawn and Chasity Collins; a brother, Richard Collins,
all of Crossett; three grandchildren, Joshua, Zachary and Seth Collins;
Glenda's children, Kim Hollis, Lee Savage and Karen Huntsman, all of
Crossett; and Glenda's nine grandchildren.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 23, in the chapel of
Jones Funeral Home of Hamburg with Rev. Charles Pullin officiating.
Pallbearers were Mike Sanderlin, Ray and Lewis Elton, Jerry Lee
Stanley, Ronnie Ware and J. W. Mann. Honorary pallbearers were Bobby
and Mark Stanley, Glen Hamilton and Lee Savage. Burial followed
services at the Promise Land Cemetery, directed by Jones Funeral Home

FOUNTAIN HILL, AR--
MR.
JOSH CUNNINGHAM, 70, of Fountain Hill died Sunday, March
5, 2000, at the Drew Memorial Hospital in Monticello. He was a native
and a resident of Fountain Hill for most of his life, a former resident
of Clarksdale, Mississippi, and he was a retired electrician and a
member of the Zion United Methodist Church. He is preceded in death by
his wife, Mrs. Charlene Cunningham, in 1994 and his parents, Gus
& Georgia Mae Crabtree Cunningham.
Survivors include three sons, Edward, Roger and Carl Cunningham all of
Fountain Hill; two daughters, Sherry G. Maxwell of Fountain Hill and
Patricia Sury of Houston, TX; three brothers, Ben Cunningham of
Winnsboro, LA, Earl Cunningham of Monticello and Lloyd Cunningham of
Baskin, LA; two sisters, Margaret Whitsit of Monticello and Margie
Thomas of Napa, CA; seven grandchildren, Jimmy Langley, Michael
Cunningham, Cassie Maxwell, Kevin Maxwell, Melissa Cunningham, Amanda
& Shelby Smith; and two great-grandchildren Amber &
Kristopher Langley.
Funeral services were planned for 10 a.m., Tuesday, March 7, in the
Zion United Methodist Church with Revs. Pat Wilkerson and Lane Amos
officiating. Pallbearers were to be Scott Strickland, David Kinney,
Harrison Shaver, Jr., Justin & Ronnie Pennington and Joe
Chaney. Interment was to follow services at the Zion Cemetery, directed
