Cleveland, OK--WALTER MOORE PARRISH, was born November 22, 1906, in Lead Hill, Boone County, AR. He was the son of Feegee and Abbie (Moore) Parrish. Walter moved with his family at an early age to Anadarko, OK, where he was raised and attended school, graduating from Anadarko High School in 1924. Walter was voted most popular boy during his senior year. While attending high school, he met Delia Christeene Cooper, known as Sis. Walter and Sis were both hired by Western Union as Telegraph Operators and often communicated with each via the telegraph. Walter, in fact, proposed marriage to Sis on the telegraph in 1927. The couple was married on March 14, 1927, in Lexington, OK. They made their initial home in Purcell but moved to Cleveland, OK, on January 1, 1928. The couple had 1 daughter, Wanda, and continued to call Cleveland home throughout their 75 years of marriage. Walter and Sis purchased the Arlington Hotel, a Cleveland landmark for many years, on September 1, 1936, and operated the hotel for nearly 7 years before selling the hotel in December of 1943. Walt enlisted in the United States Army after selling the hotel, but was deferred from active duty due to age. The couple then moved to Sayre for a short time as Walt began working for the MKT Railroad as a Telegraph Operator. They returned to Cleveland after a short stay in Sayre, when Walter was transferred to that area with the railroad. He was later employed in the mid 1950's by the United States Postal Service as a Mail Carrier, retiring in 1972. After the couple's retirement from the postal service and the Cleveland Public Library, respectively, they moved to Muskogee to be near their family. They later returned to Cleveland in the early 1990's and moved into the Baptist Retirement Village. Walt and Sis were honored as Cleveland's Outstanding Citizens a few years ago and received a citation from the Governor of Oklahoma. They both were longtime and faithful members of the First United Methodist Church in Cleveland. He was an avid baseball fan and also enjoyed carpentry and woodworking. Sis preceded him in death on March 8, 2002. Walt continued to reside at the Baptist Village for a time after the death of his wife, but moved to the Baptist Village in Owasso in order to receive additional care.
