Arkansas Genealogy Trails
SANDERS, Albert,
83, of Piggott, died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2007, at the
Piggott Community Hospital. He was born May 15, 1923 in
Clay County, the son of the late William and Nellie
Russell Sanders. He was married to Mary Dawson on Nov.
30, 1946. He is survived by his wife, Mary Sanders of
Piggott; two sons, James Sanders of Sikeston and Eddie
Sanders of Piggott; five daughters, Nellie Alexander of
McComb, Mich., Barbara French and Brenda French, both of
Pevely, Mo., Mary Moore of Florissant, Mo., and Loretta
Banegas, of College Station, Tex.; three brothers, John
Sanders of Ozark, Mo., Monroe Sanders of Malden, Billy
Sanders of Jonesboro; and three sisters, Lina Mae Jackson
of Piggott, Leona Mungle of Patton, Mo., and Gertrude
Wikowsky of Rector; sixteen grandchildren; and four
great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his
parents; a brother, Marvin Sanders; a sister, Alline
Cato; and son-in-law, Cleatie Sharp. Graveside services
were Saturday, Feb. 10, at Mitchell Cemetery in Greenway
with Rev. Mike Book. McDaniel Funeral Home was in charge
of the arrangements.--The Piggott Times, Feb. 14, 2007.
Knobel, AR--JOSEPH SELLMEYER
was born March 22, 1862 and died November 26, 1949. His death
marks the end of the trail for the last of the pioneer brothers,
Barney, Henry and Joe Sellmeyer, the first brother having come to
Knobel in 1878 from Oldenburg, Indiana.
"Uncle Joe" as he was familiarly called was for 65 years the guiding
spirit of Knobel. A resident since 1884 he and his brother,
Barney, established the Sellmeyer Mercantile Company that year.
By virtue of his long years of effort, his capacity for
leadership and his practice of thrift combined with a love of fair
dealing and honesty, he built for himself a wide circle of friends over
Northeast Arkansas.
In 1896 he was united in marriage to Bernadina Dahmus of Oldenburg,
Indiana, who preceded him in death two years ago. Surviving are
three sons, Leo, Edward, and Carl Sellmeyer; and one daughter, Mrs. M.
D. Byers; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.Services were
conducted Tuesday by the Rev. Edward Dahmus of St. Libory, Illinois, a
brother-in-law of the deceased, assisted by Knobel Pastor Msgr. Joseph
Hoflinger, at St. George's Church. Burial was at Bernard Cemetery
at Knobel.

MIMS, FL--THOMAS B. SONGER,
58, Harrison Road, Mims, died Thursday, Jan. 19. Mr. Songer was a
retired aerospace technician for the U.S. government. Born in Clay
County, Ark., he moved to Central Florida in 1977. He was Protestant.
He was a member of Keystone Trinty Lodge 243 Free and Accepted Masons,
Webster Grove, Mo.
Survivors: wife, Elaine; son, David, Merritt Island; daughter, Linda
Coak, Rush, Ky.; sister, Adell Wyatt, St. Louis; seven grandchildren.

Cape Girardeau, MO--WILMA A. STOKES, 92,
longtime Cape Girardeau resident, died Thursday, Jan 10, 2008 at
Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, IL. She was born Oct 7,
1915 in Piggott, Ark., daughter of Elmer Roscoe and Mertie Frances
Moore Ranney. She and Leonard Grant Stokes were married Dec 19,
1936 at the Maple Avenue Methodist Church Parsonage in Cape Girardeau.
He died May 19, 1981.
Mrs. Stokes' family moved to Cape Girardeau when she was 5. She
moved with her husband to Louisville, Ky for about two years during
World War II, returning to Cape Girardeau until 1983. After a
time away, she again lived in Cape from 1994 until 2005. She
worked for Superior Electric in the repair department and in
production. Mrs. Stokes was a member of Clinton United Methodist
Church in Clinton, MO, and had formerly been a member of Maple
Avenue United Methodist Church as well as Centenary United Methodist
Church. She was a former volunteer at Southeast Missouri Hospital.
Survivors include a daughter, Julia Wise, and grandson, Christopher
Wise, and his wife, Jessica, all of Springfield. In addition to
her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Don and Larkin
Francis Ranney, and a sister, Trina Maxine McCart.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14, 2008 at Ford and
Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 1 p.m.
Tuesday, Jan 15, 2008 at the funeral home, with the Revs. Scott Moon,
Ann Mowery and Jim Sanderson officiating. Burial will be at Cape
County Memorial Park in Cape Girardeau.
