Conway County Arkansas Genealogy Trails DREADFUL TORNADO IN CONWAY COUNTY, ARK, May 5, 1858 LITTLE ROCK DAILY REPUBLICAN, Sept 2, 1873 HARRIS PARDONED, April 15, 1902 MORRILTON DEMOCRAT, 1929 MORRILTON DEMOCRAT, 1930 MORRILTON DEMOCRAT, 1931 PETIT JEAN COUNTRY HEADLIGHT, 1995 ![]() --The
Little
Rock True Democrat has a letter dated Springfield, Conway County, Ark.,
April 12, giving the following account of a tornado which laid the
principal part of that (county) town in ruins. Happily there
was
no loss of life:
"Our little town has just witnessed one of those dreadful visitations which, in one fell moment, lays waste the labor of years. It now lies in ruins. Saturday, the 10th instant, was a warm, cloudy day, with occasional showers, and dark heavy masses of cloud passing. Thus the day passed until about 4 p.m., when the terrible warning of the approaching tornado was faintly heard in the distance. A sense of terror and utter helplessness came over all as the dreadful roaring each moment came louder and fiercer, increasing in violence until it absolutely roared louder than thunder. As yet, no signs of the dread destroyer were visible, but in an instant more, the fiery livid cloud of blue, black, yellow, and every other color, came like a whizzing bullet, bearing destruction on its wings, and leaving along its desolating course the tokens of its terrific power. So rapid was its flight that an eye witness saw a scope of timber embracing some fifteen or twenty acres, immediately south of the town, go to the ground simultaneously. "The storm came from the south and passed directly through the centre of the town, leaving a heap of ruins; yet by some miraculous dispensation of Providence, no person was killed or even seriously injured, although there were many persons in the town at the time. There are not more than one-sixth part of the buildings left standing--some were thrown prostrate--others unroofed and carried several feet from their foundations, and others wrecked and shattered so as to be useless. Immediately after the storm abated, there were to be seen the confused heaps of brush, logs, house roofs, shingles, furniture, clothing, &c., scattered in every direction, where a few minutes before stood the town of Springfield--while the homeless, shelterless inhabitants were seen hunting in tree tops and under brush heaps for their clothing. The succeeding day (Sunday) was a busy day in Springfield. The citizens went immediately to work to fix up and recover their shattered homes to protect their families from the inclemency of the weather. All are now busy rebuilding and clearing up the rubbish, and striving bravely to repair their losses." --Charleston Mercury, May 5, 1858. ![]() --Lewisburg
