JIM LEE HOWELL, 80, WAS COACH OF NFL GIANTS
LONOKE, Ark. -- Former New York Giants player and coach JIM LEE HOWELL,
who served as mentor to coaching greats Tom Landry and Vince Lombardi,
died Wednesday in his home. He was 80. Mr. Howell joined the Giants as
an end in 1937, one year before the team won the world championship in
1938.
After his playing days, he coached the ends for the Giants under Steve
Owen from 1949-53. He took over the head coaching job when Owen left.
The Giants, who limped along with a 3-9 record in 1953, were 7-5 in Mr.
Howell's first season as coach in 1954. He led the Giants to four title
games, including New York's 23-17 overtime loss to the Baltimore Colts
in 1958. His 1956 Giants team won the NFL championship.
Overall, his Giants teams went 55-29-4.
"He was generally overlooked because he had Tom Landry and Vince
Lombardi on his staff," Giants president Wellington T. Mara said. "But
it was to his credit that he recognized their abilities. He was content
with that. As he often said, he blew up the footballs and kept order."
From 1961 to 1979, Mr. Howell served as director of player personnel.
Following his retirement, he served as a special scout and consultant
for the Giants from 1980 to 1986.
