Bean-Massey-Burge Funeral Home, Grand Prairie, (214) 263-7200 --Fort Worth Star-Telegram (TX) - May 5, 1996 SAN ANTONIO, TX–JEWELL G. WALL lived to see a new century and marveled at the changes in the world but always kept his focus on his family. "A lot of times he would say: 'Just think, we went from no cars to a man on the moon -everything has changed,' " recalled a daughter, Patricia Welty of San Antonio. Wall died Saturday of pneumonia. He was 101. "He was in awe of that, how long he had lived. But by the same token, he kept up with the times, he did not live in the past. "His family was his life -he just loved his family," the daughter said. He was born Aug. 14, 1892, in Pike County, Ark., and was reared in Little Rock, where he worked at his family's general store. He graduated from high school and business college and moved with his parents to Mathis, where they opened another store. He enlisted in the Army in December 1917, at Camp Travis in San Antonio, and quickly rose to the rank of sergeant major due to his business background. He wanted to serve overseas during World War I, but his duties kept him at Camp Travis for his entire tour. His first date with the woman who eventually became his wife was in downtown San Antonio on Armistice Day, Welty said. They were married in 1922, after Wall was discharged and was working in real estate in South Texas. His business was wiped out during the Depression and he worked as a manager of a cattle ranch near Cotulla, before returning to San Antonio and taking a job as a salesman. A high score on a Civil Service exam in 1934 propelled him into the U.S. Customs Service in Corpus Christi. He returned to San Antonio during World War II and worked as a chief clerk at Fort Sam Houston. In 1948, he joined the Internal Revenue Service in San Antonio and served as a deputy collector until his retirement in 1962. During his retirement, he enjoyed traveling, photography and playing dominoes. "He said the best birthday present he had ever received was when he was 16 years old and his parents gave him his first camera," his daughter said. He maintained the hobby for his entire life and even developed his own photos in a bedroom at his house. Wall was an avid reader and instilled in his children a respect for literature, his daughter recalled. "I lived at the library when I was a child," she said. "He was a very curious person and he loved to travel. He also loved cooking candies, sweets and pies." He was very outgoing with a strong sense of humor. "He was just full of common sense - the family was his main focus," his daughter said. Wall was preceded in death by his wife, Dannie Lee Wall; a daughter, Jeanne Stiegler; and a son, Jack Wall. Additional survivors include two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Porter Loring Chapel, with the Rev. Raymond Judd officiating. Interment will follow in Mission Burial Park North. --San Antonio Express-News (TX) - May 16, 1994 Huntington, IN--William Frazier White, 79, of Huntington, a native of Pike County, Ark., died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 1998, at Huntington Memorial Hospital.
