PIONEER OAKLAND ATTORNEY IS DEAD
John H. Brewer Passes Away After Long Life of Activity
In the death of John H. Brewer last night at his home, 770 Kingston avenue, the community loses one of its
oldest lawyers and pioneers of the profession in this vicinity. The dead man came to San Francisco in 1854 and
commenced the practice of his chosen profession. In 1864 he made his home in Oakland, where he resided until the
time of his death In 1890 he removed his law office to this city, retiring from active practice ten years ago.
Brewer was a graduate of Yale University with the class of ’50, being a member of the Psi Upsilon and Phi
Beta Kappa fraternities. In the early days he served on the board of education in Oakland and San Francisco.
Besides his widow the deceased leaves three daughters, Mrs. M.B. Fowler, Pasadena; Miss Annie W., a teacher in
the Oakland high school and Miss Henrietta.
Brower was 85 years of age and his death come only eight weeks following that of his son, John A. Brewer,
the law lecturer and graduate of the University of California. The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon at
2 p.m. from the family home.
Death was due to old age.

John Johnson a native of Ireland, aged eighty-four years died
to-day at his residence, 591 Eighteenth street. He had resided
in this city for about twenty years. He leaves a family of grown
children. The funeral will be held on Monday.

Kempsey, Robert
Hurt 2 Years Ago; He Dies Today.
Robert Kempsey, a miner who sustained a broken back two years
ago died to day at Pabiola Hospital where he has been an inmate
for the last two months. His remains will be forwarded to Butte
County for interment.

Mrs. Lelia Ware Given Last Rites
Mrs. Lelia Luella Ware closed her eyes in death at her home on South Garden avenue Tuesday morning, greatly mourned
by the many who knew her. A native of Michigan, she had been a resident of Hayward for about three years. She was
the widow of the late Oscar Ware.
The Rev. George G. Saywell, minister of the Methodist church, officiated in funeral services held at the Sorensen
Brothers' mortuary Wednesday afternoon, after which the body was sent to Lewiston, Idaho for burial. She is survived
by seven daughters- Mrs. E.B. McArthur and Mrs. D. A. Allen of Hayward, Mrs. G. Ellis of Vale, Oregon, Mrs. O.R.
Denny of Clarkston, Washington, Mrs. William Eastman of Nez Perce, Idaho, Mrs. William Fisher of Republic, Kansas
and Mrs. J.W. Hess of Santa Ana. Her son, the late W.L. Ware died but 10 days ago.
