BROWN, ELNORA H.
Died—At
Brown’s Ranch near Pilot Hill, El Dorado County, September 6, 1876, Mrs.
Elnora H. Brown, aged 52 years. Mrs. Brown has resided near Pilot Hill
since 18_2 and by her exemplary deportment, in every relation of life,
had won the respect and esteem of all. A large circle of neighbors and
friends attended the funeral on the 8th, Rev. Mr. Cummings
officiating. The Pilot Hill Grange, of which she was an honored member,
attended in a body, and the services at the grave were conducted
according to the impressive rites of their order. [Placer Weekly
Argus, Auburn, Saturday, 9-23-1876. Submitted by K. Marynik]
GANONG, WILLIAM
William Ganong was
shot and fatally wounded at Wirt’s ranch, a few miles above Georgetown,
on the 16th by a man named Madden. It appears there was a
dispute between them in regard to the ownership of the ranch. Ganong
died from his wounds. Madden is still at large at last accounts. The
sheriff, two constables, and some citizens are hunting him. It is
scarcely possible he can escape. The whole transaction is regarded as a
cold-blooded murder. After shooting Ganong he tried to kill young Hubrey,
the only witness. The boy only escaped by the fleetness of his mule.
Ganong was about sixty years old and much respected. [Placer Weekly
Argus, Friday, 10-25-1872. Submitted by K. Marynik]
JABINE, WILLIAM
The dead body of
William Jabine was found upon a sand bar in the American River at Coloma
on Monday last, where it had apparently been for several days. The last
seen of him alive, so far as can be ascertained, was on or about the 17th
of April. It is supposed that he went to the river by way of Poverty
Point, but whether the drowning was accidental or intentional is a
mystery. He was an old pioneer of the county, formerly residing at
Georgetown and Kelsey. He had no family or relatives in this state that
we are aware of. He was a native of Maryland and aged 59 years. [Placer
Weekly Argus, Saturday, 5-10-1879. Submitted by K. Marynik]
SEVY, THOMAS
Another Pioneer
Gone—The Placerville Republican of December 3rd
says: Thomas Sevy, aged 46 years, was found dead in front of his cabin
near Mosquito on Sunday or Monday last, we did not ascertain which. His
death is supposed to have been caused by heart disease. Sevy came to
this coast from the State of New York with the Donner Party in 1846, but
with a portion of the party branched off and went to Oregon from whence,
on the breaking out of the gold excitement, he came to California and to
this county in 1848 and has ever since remained here, continually
engaged in mining. His remains were expected here yesterday for burial
under the auspices of the Pioneers. [Placer Weekly Argus, Saturday,
12-5-1874.Submitted by K. Marynik]
STONE, JOSEPH G.
Indian Outrage—We
learn from a letter dated near Barnes’ Bar on the North Fork, some
further particulars of the death of Mr. Joseph G. Stone. He was
conversing with two other men beside a camp fire in front of Mr. Richard
Smythe’s tent, when he was instantly killed by two arrows piercing his
heart. The Indians fled immediately down the river to within half a mile
of the Oregon Bar, where they stole a quantity of provisions and shot a
man from the west—one arrow entering the calf of his right leg and the
other his left thigh; not dangerously, however. They committed other
depredations on their way. After the funeral of Mr. Stone, a party of
forty-five put off after the Indians, but we are not advised of their
success. Mr. Stone is supposed to be from Cambridge near Boston, and it
is the desire of his friends that this intelligence may reach his
family. [Placer Times, Sacramento City, Wednesday, 5-8-1850]
WOLVERTON, ALVIN SHELLY
Wife Finds
Husband Dead
GEORGETOWN, Nov.
22—Alvin Wolverton, 52, of Kelsey, was found dead by his wife upon her
return from a trip to Placerville Friday. He had been in ill health for
some time, having recently been a patient in a mental hospital in
Oregon. The Wolvertons had been following the fruit and vegetable crops
in the valley and had only returned to their cabin on their mining claim
a few days ago. Deputy Sheriff Harry Clifton of Georgetown was called by
Mrs. Wolverton, and he in turn called for Coroner Robert Voth, and both
reported the death a suicide. [Auburn Journal, Thursday, 11-22-1951.

Jean Francois Webb, a former resident of Placerville who for years
had made his home in the east, died on January 5 at White Plains,
New York. This is according to word received during the week from
his son. Mr. Webb was a native of St. Louis, born there 82 years
ago. He had been a lawyer, soldier, pioneer and miner and inventor.
Within the last few years he had perfected an automatic safety
device for stopping trains within a dangerous 'block'.
In 1925 he was declared to be the oldest commuter from White Plains,

in the east, Mr. Webb had a home at Denver, Colorado, and made
frequent trips to the capital of the Centennial state. He had mining
interests in that vicinity at one time. On August 9, last, an
embolism developed on his lower right leg and he was incapacitated.
The ailment became more severe during the Winter and on January 1 he
went to White Plains hospital for an operation which was never
performed because of his weakened heart action. Mr. Webb was a

MRS. MILLIKIN IS
TAKEN BY DEATH
Widow of County Doctor is
Laid at Rest Tuesday
at Local Plot
Placerville and El Dorado County
lost a resident whose many years of
life here had endeared her to a wide
circle, when Mrs. Helen Augusta Millikin
died last Saturday.
Her many friends and acquaintances
met at ten o'clock on Tuesday morning
at the Church of Our Saviour to
attend funeral services which were conducted
by the Rev Thomas C. Maxwell.
Burial was at Union Cemetery.
Mrs. Millikin succumbed at the home
of Dr. and Mrs. W. A. Reckers, on
Coloma Street, to which she had been
moved from her own home across the
street when she became ill several
weeks ago. Mrs. Reckers gave her
personal attention to the care of her
friend of many years, but the infirmities
of advanced age were too great
to be overcome.
Mrs. Millikin was the widow of Dr.
Millikin whose long and successful
practice brought him a partial retirement
which death terminated ten
years ago. She was seventy years of
age and a native of San Mateo County.
Among the many who mourn her
passing are those who had become to
know her more intimately through her
ability as a teacher of piano. It was
her custom to present her pupils in
annual recitals at the Masonic temple
and the high regard held for her by
the pupils was often reflected in the
excellence of their presentations.

this city. Born in Yerington, Nevada, August 12, 1881, Dr. Leavitt

years and at the time of his death was a member of the staff, in

fact that he seemed unable to make a complete recovery from an
attack of influenza several years ago. He was a member of the
B.P.O.E. and the F. & A. M., under whose auspices funeral services
