Atwater Native
ATWATER-- Jessie Frago, a life-long resident of Atwater, died Thursday at a local hospital. She was 77.
Mrs. Frago was a member of the Eagles Auxillary for 43 years, serving as president for two years. She was a volunteer for the Bloss Hospital Thrift Shop, as well as serving as commissioner for the Atwater City and County Parks and Recreation. She was a member of U.P.P.E.C., The Italian Lodge, Atwater Senior Social Club and the Merced County Oldtimers Association. Survivors are a husband, Joe L Frago of Atwater; a daughter, Carol Wood of Merced; two sons, Gary Frago of Atwater and Gene Pimentel of Merced; a sister, Lena Dias of Merced; three brothers Ed Valladao of Atwater, Walt Balladao of LeGrand and Art Balladao of Carson City, Nevada. Five grandchildren and a great- grandchild. Visitation will be from 2 pm to 9 pm Monday at the Redwood Chapel of Ivers & Alcorn Funeral Home in Atwater. A vigil prayer service will b e at 7 pm at the chapel. Services will be at 9:30 a m Tuesday at st. Anthony's Catholic Church with the Rev. Rod Craig officiating.
Burial will be in Winton Cemetery.

Sweet potato farmer

ATWATER-- Joe L. Frago, a farmer and dairyman, died Friday in Anberry Rehabilitation Hospital. He was 88.
Mr Frago was born November 6, 1906 in Atwater. He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Y.M.I. No. 80, past president of Livingston Pentecost Club, U.P.E.C.of Merced No,29, past president of F.O.E. of Merced, member of I.D.E.S. He owned and operated Frago's Market in Atwater from 1964-1976. Mr Frago was a fan of the San Francisco Giants and Atwater-Livingston Yams.
He was preceded in death by wife Jessie Frago in March of 1992; sisters Mary Miller and Belle Gonzales; and brother Bill Frago. Mr Frago is survived by one daughter, Carol Wood of Merced; two sons, Gary Frago of Atwater and Gene Pimentel of Merced; one sister, Lillian Maumoynier of Dos Palos; one brother; Matt Frago of Atwater; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Visitation will be held 1 to 8 PM today at Wilson Family Funeral Chapel. Rosary will be at 7p.m. today at the chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. T uesday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. The Rev. Tom Timmings will officiate. Burial will be in the Winton District Cemetery.

HITE, HERBERT L.
Herbert L. Hite, Builder, Kin of Pioneers, DiesYUBA CITY (Sutter Co.)—Funeral services will be held at 1 PM Wednesday in the Ullrey Memorial Chapel for Herbert L. Hite, who died in the Veterans Hospital in Livermore, Alameda County, Friday, at the age of 82 years. Hite lived for many years in Yuba County but for the last 20 years had made his home in Snelling, Merced County. Hite, a native of Spenceville, Nevada County, was born of a family which came to California in the gold rush days. His paternal grandfather, Stephen Hite, had come around the Horn in 1849, established the first saddlery business in Sacramento. In early youth, Herbert Hite served on sailing vessels, touching many ports of the South Pacific, Indian and Asian waters. He left the sea to volunteer for service in the Spanish American War. He knew Theodore Roosevelt. In 1909-1911, he was in Alaska where he served as a deputy United States marshal. On his return to the states, he followed the building trades and continued actively in them until shortly before his death. Hite was affiliated with the Rosebar Lodge, No. 89, of the Masons and served as master for five years. He also served as patron of the Smartville, Yuba County, Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. He also was affiliated for more than 50 years with the Odd Fellows, was a past noble grand, secretary, and was district deputy grand master of District 55. He was survived by his wife, Ida; daughters, Serena Hickey and Naida Stodden, both of Sacramento; grandsons, Roy Hickey of Sacramento, Charles Hickey of New York, and Kent Stodden of Sacramento; and by three great-grandsons, Michael, Dennis, and Jeffrey Hickey. McCALL, MAY ALICE nee COX

May 31, 1920 – Dec. 12, 1996. May McCall, 76, of Merced died Thursday. Mrs. McCall was a native of Volta. She lived in Merced County all her life. She was a homemaker. She was active in Salvation Army and Merced Cherish. She is survived by her children, Sandy Baughman of Napa, Caroline Valdez of Taft, Ronald McCall, Thomas McCall, James McCall and Richard McCall, all of Merced, and William McCall of Modesto, and 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A funeral will be conducted at 10 AM Monday at Ivers & Alcorn Funeral Home. Burial will be at Merced District Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 PM to 9 PM Sunday at the funeral home.
