REYNOLDS MONROE, MABEL MABEL MONROE DIES IN WRECK, GRANDSON CRITICALLY INJURED A high speed accident near the McGarva ranch south of Alturas claimed the life of Mable Monroe, 72, and critically injured her grandson, Nelson, 22, early Saturday morning. Investigating officers of the CHP said that Nelson was the driver of the vehicle that apparently entered an S turn on the county road at "an extremely high rate of speed." The car, a late model Buick, went off the shoulder of the road on the right hand side and traveled 288 feet before colliding head-on with a huge boulder that measured 5 ft. by 4 ft. by 5 ft. The impact sheared the top of the boulder off near the ground and actually moved it six inches, officers reported. The Monroes had been returning to their ranch home located only a short distance from the accident scene. It's believed that the collision occurred about 3:15 a.m. but it was not discovered until Charles King, who works in Alturas as a bartender, happened by enroute to his home also located a few miles from the scene. King went for help at the Harold Monroe resident where an ambulance was summoned. That call was placed at 4:30 a.m. Mrs. Monroe is believed to have died outright, Nelson was taken to Alturas where he was given emergency treatment and then flown to the Washoe Medical Center in Reno where he has remained on the critical list. His most serious injuries is reported to be a shattered leg that, members of the family report, may have to be amputated. Mrs. Monroe has been a highly prominent Modoc resident for most of her life. She was born Mabel Arzna on March 2, 1899 in Lakeview, Oregon. She married Nelson Monroe in 1918, only one day before her husband left for army assignment to overseas duty in France. She and her husband ranched near Likely all of their lives where he was the first manager and later owner of the Corporation Ranch. After the property was sold in the early 1960s, they retained acreage on the home place where they have continued to reside.
