CARNEGIE LIBRARY READY FOR USE
The dedication of the Carnegie Library will take place here October
11th, and it is conceded by all who have seen the building that
Roseville has the best $10,000 library every built.
When the Women's Improvement Club was formed more than two years
ago, the first work undertaken by them was to obtain money from Carnegie
with which to build such a structure. A. B. McRae, local capitalists,
gave to the city for library purposes one of the best building lots in
Roseville, valued at $1000. Then it was necessary for the city to raise
a certain amount of money to maintain the library. This was done by the
trustees levying a tax rate of 20c per $100.
The walls are built of wire cut buff brick, and the roof is mission
tile, all Placer County
materials. Terrazzio steps lead up to a beautifully and well
lighted vestibule, while the windows are beautiful plate glass, the
woodwork being finished in natural color. The basement contains a
lecture room, a
smoking room, a receiving room, furnace, two lavatories, and
store room. Upper room,
besides space for the books, will have a librarian's room and children's
room, also fireplace and mantel. The entire building is illuminated by
the latest improved lighting system for public buildings, and unlike
most library buildings, it is completely finished in every detail.
The grounds will be planted to lawn, while window boxes adorn the
sides of the building. Besides the generosity of Mr. McRae, great credit
is due the board of library trustees -- Mrs. B. Woodbridge, G. A.
Macpherson, LeLoy Burns, Mrs. R. F. Theile, Ed Corlett,
Mrs. Butler, and
Mrs. George Lentz. Especial credit is due Mrs. Woodbridge and G. A.
Macpherson, as a great deal of additional labor fell to their lot as
president and secretary respectively.
