Marriages in Placer
County During the Year 1877
[from Placer Weekly
Argus, Auburn, 1-12-1878]
The number of marriages contracted in this
county during the year 1877 was 72, so far as we can gather from the
official record of the certificates on file in the Recorder’s office.
Unaccountably to us, there is some slight irregularity in the number;
for we have found in the columns of the Argus mention of
marriages which do not appear upon the record. Thus the real number is
somewhat, though it is to be presumed not much, greater than is
indicated by the following list:

This list does not comprise the names of
Placerites who were married at places outside of this county. It is
therefore probable that the full number of marriages to be credited to
the county should be nearly or quite 80. Although a few of the above
named couples are not residents of Placer, yet we find that a larger
number went away to be married, and returned here either during or after
the honeymoon. We recall, from memory, quite a number of these. It will
be perceived that, of the above list, 15 couples were married in Auburn,
14 at Dutch Flat, 8 at Iowa Hill, 7 at Colfax, 4 at Rocklin, 3 at
Lincoln, 3 at Roseville, and 2 couples at each of the following places:
Michigan Bluff, Gold Run, Newcastle, Penryn, and Sheridan. September
seems to have been the favorite month—15 couples embarking on the
matrimonial sea during that month. December saw 8 couples united, and
November, 7. During the first month but two couples were united, and
during the last there were four times as many. All in all, this is not a
bad showing. In the large centers of population in the Eastern States,
the marriages average about one to every 150 inhabitants, per annum. If
this rule applied to Placer County, it would indicate a population of
but little over 10,500.
[Submitter’s note: Because of the
fuzziness of some letters, there might be a few mis-spellings of names.
Therefore, I recommend checking the original record rather than relying
on the spelling above.]
