Union of 1851 Lists Firms By Streets

The following is a list of Sacramento business houses printed in the Sacramento Union of March 25, 1851, listed by streets:


Slough (China Slough) and J—Henare and Co., wholesale commission merchants.

I and J—Hart Brothers, store; Hotel de France.

J and K—William Stout, vegetable dealer; P. J. Brown, wholesale grocer; Wheaton and company, wholesale grocers; Rowe and Gammons, wholesale grocers; L. P. and S. S. Crane, wholesale druggists (opened first drug store in Sacramento. At this time had three stores); Byington and company, wholesale grocers; Prettyman and Barroll, auction house; Moddus and Price, wholesale grocers.

K and L—J. B. Starr and company; Clark and Milne, auction house; Caldwell and company, cigars, wine and liquors; Alderman, White, Whitman and company auction house; Barton and Boulden, wholesale merchants; Berry, Bliss and company, auction house (three-story brick building); Fisk and Perkins, commission merchants; C. C. Flagg, auction house (three-story building); Brown and Van Wie, whole grocers.

L and M—Cavert and Hill, wholesale dealers (40-1/2x150, three stories); G. H. Woodruff and company, wholesale dealers; Hedenburg and company, Woodruff and Sprague, wholesale grocers; S. H. Meeker and company, wholesale grocers; Morrison and Richmond, wholesale grocers; F. McGilvray, wholesale dealer in flour and merchandise; Fay and company, wholesale commission merchants.

M and N—Number of excellent buildings. Three of brick, two stories high.

N and O—Small shops and occasional buildings

M and L—Storeship Crescent, rat-proof, landing place Kennebeck, Fawn and Linda—owner, William Bridland; Storeship Westpoint, Milliken and Watson, owners; Depot for upriver freight, Colville and company, nearly opposite L; Landing place Union and Tehama.

L and K—Storeship Sterling, landing place New World and Senator; Storeship Eliza, landing place New World and Senator.

K and J—Storeship Orb, landing place Hartford and Captain Sutter; Storeship Globe, landing place Confidence and W. G. Hunt.

J and Slough—Storeship Dimon.
