SAD DEATH OF A CHILD – A
Terrible Accident Which Happened on Tuesday at Florin
A terrible accident happened near
Florin in this county, day before yesterday. On that day, a little
six-year-old son of Henry Jackson asked his mother if he could go and
play in a field in which men were making hay. On receiving an
affirmative reply, the little fellow went out. A short time afterward,
Mrs. Jackson went to a water tank, which is filled by means of a
windmill, to get a bucket of water. She saw blood on the surface of the
water and, on looking closer, was horrified to see the lifeless body of
her boy at the bottom of the tank. The mother screamed, and, before the
men could reach her, she sprang into the tank and seized the body of her
child. It was ascertained that the lad’s head was horribly crushed, and
investigation went to prove that he had climbed up to the tank to look
in and had got in such a position that the pump rod of the windmill
struck him in the back of the head, throwing him into the tank. The
deceased was a bright little boy and was an only son, although his
parents have five daughters. The boy’s funeral took place at Florin
yesterday. [Sacramento Bee, Thursday, May 20, 1886.

TAYLOR, ROBERT FRANK
ACCIDENTAL DROWNING—Yesterday
afternoon between 3 and 4 o’clock, a sad accident occurred in this city.
Robert Frank, aged ten years, and his brother, eight years of age, sons
of Frank F. Taylor, were walking in the vicinity of B and Sixteenth
streets, when they came to a place where the water was running over the
road. Being told that other boys had waded safely across, the Taylors
determined to try it. While going across, the younger boy met a deep
place, and in rescuing him, the elder got beyond his depth and was
drowned. In saving the life of his brother, Robert lost his own. The
smaller boy called for help, and his cries attracted to the spot a young
man named George Rider. The boy, pointing to the water, said “My brother
is in there.” As Rider could see no movement of the water, he thought
the child was mistaken and took him home. It was soon ascertained that
Robert Taylor was missing, and the search for the body was successful in
about an hour and a half after the accident. Coroner Conboie did not
deem it necessary to hold an inquest on the body. The funeral of R. F.
Taylor will take place at 2 o’clock tomorrow afternoon, from the
resident of his father on Fourth Street, near the Post Office.
DEATHS
In this city, April 9th,

months. Funeral at 2 o’clock tomorrow (Wednesday) afternoon from

LUTHER, WILLIAM H.
Wm. H.
Luther Is Dead. One of Sacramento’s Oldest Pioneers Crosses the Dark
River—Saw the State in Its Youthful Days
William
H. Luther, one of the oldest members of the Sacramento Society of
California Pioneers, passed away at his home, 1726 G Street, last
evening. He had a wide circle of friends and had for several years been
secretary of the Society of Pioneers. Besides his wife he leaves three
children—Mrs. J. J. C. Fitzgerald, Mrs. William H. Dixon, and Annie C.
Luther—to mourn his loss. Mr. Luther was born in New York State 80
years, 6 months, and 25 days ago, and up to a short time before his
demise had been active, age considered. In February, 1849, William H.
Luther, in company with an elder brother, sailed from New York on the
ship Elizabeth Ellen and came around Cape Horn, arriving in San
Francisco September 18th
of that year. For a time he acted as passenger agent for boats running
from San Francisco to Sacramento. He came to Sacramento with his brother
and went to Placerville and engaged in placer mining. For a time they
were unsuccessful, but Mr. Luther chanced on a rich strike and at the
end of a month they had a large pickle jar full of gold. They sold the
claim for $600, and the buyers took from it $15,000. In 1852 Mr. Luther
and his brother formed the Empire Company and worked the American River
above Spanish Bar, diverting the water. One morning the bed of the
stream was dry, and Mr. Luther picked up fifty pounds of gold. The
company realized $165,000. In 1857 Mr. Luther went to New York State and
there married Miss Sarah J. Alvord. He returned, spent some time in Lone
Valley and in 1879 came to Sacramento to reside. He joined the Pioneer
Society in 1863. The funeral will be private.

Sipp grew up in Kelsey where she served as deputy postmistress under her
father in what was at the time a lively mining town. She and John Sipp
