James Elton Collord

Obit: James Elton Collord, of Cambria, California, was born at Tetonia, Idaho, on May 26, 1911 and died at 88 in the presence of his family on Monday, Sept. 13, 1999.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie McRae Collord of Cambria; daughter, Kay meier of Morro Bay, Calif.; son, Jim Collord Jr. of Elko, Nev.; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Jim’s professional career as a miner, geologist and mining engineer spanned over 65 years and took him throughout the western United States and into Mexico and Ethiopia.  He had first come to the Cambria area to run a quicksilver mine on the Hearst Ranch for Herbert Hoover in 1942.  His work in Idaho was at numerous mines and prospects in the central part of the state, including Stibnite and Thunder Mountain.  In 1950 he received the prestigious Carnegie Hero’s Medal for rescuing a fellow worker after a blasting accident near McCall, Idaho.

He had been a member of the Society of Mining Engineers for 41 years.  He had also been Master Mason in the McCall Grand Lodge for 54 years.  He will be remembered for his honesty, integrity and humor by his family, friends and the men that he worked with.

Jim will be cremated; no services are planned in Cambria. A memorial service will be held on Oct. 16 in Boise.  If desired, a donation may be made to the American Diabetes Association or to the Shriners Hospitals.

WHITACRE, DAVID RALPH
 David Ralph Whitacre 71 of Nipomo died Tuesday  Nov.3 six weeks after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Dave retired as Director of Operations with  U. S News and World Report magazine. His 22 years of retirement were spent playing golf with his friends at BlackLake golf course and relaxing with his family. He is survived by his wife of 50 years Marilyn, daughter  Lori(Mike) Bickel of Atascadero, a son Keith of Nipomo. Two grandchildren Alex and Aaron. A  sister Patricia Rhinehart of Centerville, Ohio.His parents deceased were Erna and Ralph Whitacre of Dayton, Ohio. At his request there will be no service and cremation has taken place.
