| ORENA, MARIA
ANTONIA nee DE LA GUERRA LATAILLADE Daughter of Historic De la Guerra Passes in Nintieth year of life. Mrs. Gasper Orena Was of Stock That Joined Spanish Rule in California With American. Mrs. Gaspar Orena, the last surviving child of Don Jose de la Guerra y Noriega, who a century ago was the Spanish comandante of the presidio of Santa Barbara and built the historic de la Guerra mansion, died at 5 o’clock yesterday afternoon at the residence, West Victoria Street. The funeral will probably take place Thursday from the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows, and the interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Mrs. Orena, highly beloved by all who knew her and many who knew her charities, was one of the few links between Santa Barbara’s very earliest and present period. Mrs. Orena wasborn in Santa Barbara, September 30, 1827, and consequently was in her 90th year. Her historic father came to California from Spain in 1811. He married Maria Antonia Carrillo, the daughter of Don Jose Raymundo Carrillo, who at that time was the comandante of the presidio here. Don Jose de la Guerra was the next to the last comandante under Spanish rule, which came to an end in 1810. She was born in the old presidio, and a portion of the building still stands at the northwest corner of Santa Barbara and Canon Perdido streets. The room can still be seen, facing Santa Barbara Street. Her given name was the same as her mother, Maria Antonia. She was twice married, the first time in the early forties to Don Cesare Lataillade, who died in 1849. She married Don Gaspar Orena in 1854. By the first marriage she had three children and by the second, ten. Following were her brothers and sisters: Jose Antonio de la Guerra, Francisco, Paldo, Miguel, Juan, Joaquin, Antonio, Maria, Marta Teressa de la Guerra Harinell, Maria Augustus de la Guerra Ord, Anita de la Guerra Robinson. She is survived by the following children: C. E. Lataillade, Dario Orena, Orestes J. Orena, Arturo G. Orena, Mrs. Serena O. de Koch. Mrs. Acadia T. Richard, also eighteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mrs. Orena was the youngest of the children of her family. It was a couple of years following her birth that the historic de la Guerra mansion was completed. But they all lived in it during the most romantic period in the history of California. It was during the wedding of her sister Anita to Robinson that Dana happened to Santa Barbara and this event he described so delightfully in “Two Years Before the Mast.” Mrs. Orena was unostentatious in her charities. The family has cared and distributed money from her purse. Her health and mentality were good in advancing years. She only became seriously ill with pneumonia last Saturday, and the end came very quietly yesterday. She was conscious to the last. [NEWSPAPER: unknown,1917. Submitted by Kathie Marynik] |
