Voter Registrations & Great Registers

Volunteers Dedicated to free Genealogy
In 1866, California established the Great Registry Act. All eligible voters were required to register. The Registry Act instructed county clerks to prepare Great Registers that would include names of all legal voters. Prior to 1866, voter records consisted of county poll lists. In 1872 another law required that counties publish an index or alphabetical listing of all registered voters every two years. This usually happened on the even numbered years. Women were able to register in 1911 but do not begin to appear in the registries until 1912.
This is an invaluable tool that can be used in between census years to track an ancestor.
