GOVERNMENT FILES TIMBER LAND SUITS
Denver. April 18.-In two suits filed today in the federal district county
by United States District Attorney Ward, William O. Dutton is accused of
securing timber lands illegally and of cutting and selling over 500,000 feet of
lumber wrongfully. In the first case the government charges Dutton, who is a
land owner in Archuleta county, with securing the services of James W. Dunlap
for the purpose of p--ing as an entryman in gaining possession of 120 acres of
land in Archuleta county, and of later transferring the land to Dutton. It is
alleged Dutton then cut a certain amount of timber and sold it.
In the second case, William H. Johnson is said to have been
the entryman employed by Dutton to secure 120 acres of land and that the Pagosa
Lumber Company of Pagosa Springs purchased a large amount of timber from Mr.
Dutton which the government charges was cut from land belonging to the United
States.
