Letter From a Colorado Lady
Silver Cliff, Colorado, Dec. 12, '78
They call this new town Silver Cliff, and the mountain close by, Round Mountain.
There were two gamblers shot each other here, a few weeks ago. One was killed,
and the other nearly killed. The latter was a desperate man and had killed some
men himself. Business is getting slack, but we hope it will brighten up in the
spring. It has been very cold for a week. Yesterday it got a little warmer and
began snowing. Today the snow is six inches deep. Miners that have sheds over
their mines can go ahead. This town has grown very fast since I first saw it.
There is a newspaper here, just started up, called the "Silver Cliff Miner."
Perhaps I can give you a letter hereafter that will do to publish in the Ohio
Democrat, if the weather gets so that I can get out and see the towns and the
mines. It looks as though we were going to be snowed up. There is generally more
snow on this side of the valley than on the West side, where we make our home. I
think you had better come out here and get a silver mine and get rich. I think a
woman is happier when she can earn her own living, than if she is dependent on
her father or brothers for all she needs. It is quite a mistaken notion that
some girls have, of thinking that it is degrading for them to do any kind of
work. Such girls generally sit about with holes in their stockings, reading
trashy novels. If they lived out here they would soon get those false notions
out of their heads. J----s bought a good wagon, harness and two mules, for $150.
That was pretty cheap. He has four horses besides; and two wagons. ***The boy
has come over from the ranch with the team and half a deer killed last evening.
It is nearing night and still snowing. I must close. Yours, &c. E.M.C.
