Homestead Sod House

This is my great Uncle Dick’s Colorado homestead.  The picture was taken the day after Halloween.  Everything was put on top of the house so the “neighborhood” kids wouldn’t destroy it.  The Colorado homestead was near Vernon, Colorado.

The three “Uncle boys” came to Goodland Kansas to get homestead land.  They were only a few years older than my mother.

Great Grandma Hughes and Great Aunt Lizzie came later.  They built a house in Goodland.  Somehow, they all owned it together.  Grandma, a widow, Aunt Lizzie and all 3 uncle boys were single.  (Two married late in life.)
