Wilson P. Aiken
Wilson P. Aiken, 80, of South Windsor, formerly
of Lebanon, husband of the late Margaret (Ramsay) Aiken, died
Saturday May 25, 2002 at his daughter's home in South Windsor. He
was born March 19, 1922 in North Troy, VT and had lived in Lebanon
since 1961. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and active in
the American Legion in Lebanon. Mr. Aiken was a member and former
chief of the Lebanon Volunteer Fire Department and was employed at
Agway in Franklin for many years prior to his retirement. He is
survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Bob Miller of South
Windsor, a son, Robert Aiken of Delray, Florida, 6 grandchildren, 1
great grandchild and several nieces and nephews. His family will
receive friends at the Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St. (Rte.
195) Willimantic on Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services
will be held Wednesday at the funeral home at 11:00 a.m. Burial will

Dimitri Andrews 1922 - 2003
Dimitri Andrews Jr., 81, of
Lebanon, husband of the late Lillian (Hines) Andrews, died Saturday
November 22, 2003 at the Windham Hospital. He was born April 7, 1922
in Lebanon, the son of Dimitri and Anna (Swilka) Andrews Sr. and was
a lifelong resident of Lebanon. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World
War II. Mr. Andrews owned and operated a sawmill in Lebanon and was
the first man permitted to log in the Yale Forrest. He is survived
by 4 children, Charles Andrews of Columbia, Andrew Andrews and his
wife Sherry of Lebanon, Violet Andrews of Vernon, Robert Andrews and
his wife Rosemary of Lebanon, 2 brothers, John Andrews of Lebanon,
Steve Andrews of Willimantic, 2 sisters, Stella Desrosiers of
Willimantic, Lorraine Andrews of Lebanon, 2 stepsisters, Anna Cota
of Elmira, NY, Katherine Lesi of Cromwell, 5 grandchildren, A.J.,
Kate, Ethan, Bobbi-Jo and Timothy Andrews, many nieces and nephews.
He was also predeceased by a daughter, Barbara Andrews. His family

Phyllis (Wilcox) Aspinall June 12, 1917 -
October 26, 2004
Lebanon: Phyllis Louise (Wilcox) Aspinall, widow of Gurdon A.
Aspinall, of Trumbull Highway, passed away on Tues. Oct. 26, 2004 at
Haven Health in Willimantic. Phyllis was born in Brighton, Mass. on
June 12, 1917 and was the only child of the late Frederick and
Hester Mary (Baker) Wilcox. She was a graduate of North Weymouth
High School and Framingham State Teacher's College. Her teaching
career began at Lyman Memorial High School in Lebanon, where she
taught several subjects. She then taught at Nathan Hale Ray School
in Moodus, before continuing her career at Windham High School,
where she was a beloved Home-Economics teacher from 1955 to 1977.
During this time, she and her late husband owned and operated their
Briggs Road dairy farm. Phyllis had many loves in her life: her
family, traveling with "the girls", crossword puzzles, cooking,
sewing, a good card game, and the Red Sox. She was a member of the
Lebanon Firewomen's Auxiliary, the Lebanon Senior Citizens, and
various teachers' organizations. She is survived by two daughters,
Louise P. Rheaume and her husband Paul of Ashby, Mass., Mary Lou
Beckwith and her husband Stuart of Lebanon; five grandchildren,
Brian A. Beckwith and his wife Anna, Barbara E. Archer and her
husband Bill, Bonnie B. McAneny and her husband Matt all of Lebanon,
Arthur Jankowski and his wife Kris of Delaware, and Phyllis
Jankowski of New Mexico; and twelve great-grandchildren, Victoria
and April Beckwith, Jack and Drew Archer, Nick and Jake McAneny,
Eric and Mark Jankowski, and Samantha, Hannah, Tyler, and Justin
Gonzales. Phyllis will always be remembered for her giving spirit,
and her devilish smile. Her family will receive friends at the

Clifford C. Ausburger,
71, of Mansfield, formerly of Lebanon, died Saturday January 11,
2003 in Mansfield. He was born March 13, 1931 in Lebanon, son of the
late Jacob and Caroline (Krause) Ausburger. He grew up in Lebanon
and was a constable while he lived there. Mr. Ausburger was employed
for many years at Hamilton Standard and Terry Turbine Corp. in
Windsor Locks. He was a former member of the Governor?s Horse Guard
and for many years a coach for Somers Little League teams. He is
survived by 4 children, Charles Ausburger of Storrs, Caroline Enes
of Storrs, Sandra Kipp of Farmington and Kimberly MacDonald of
Mystic, a brother, Otto Ausburger of Lebanon, a sister Lillian
Morgan of Fairfax, VT, 8 grandchildren, Kimberly Obert, Amanda,
Clarissa, Justin and Cinthia Enes, Morgan Ausburger, Chelsea and
Jack MacDonald, several nieces and nephews. His family will receive

Frederick A. Ausburger 1948 - 2005
Frederick A. Ausburger, 57, of Chaplin,
beloved husband of Jacqueline (Garceau) Ausburger for 38 years, died
peacefully, Tuesday September 6, 2005, surrounded by family after a
courageous battle with pancreatic cancer at Windham Hospital. He was
born July 4, 1948 in Lebanon, CT, son of the late Arthur and Thelma
(Bean) Ausburger and had lived in the North Windham and Chaplin area
all his life. Fred was employed at Seymour Sand and Gravel before
retiring. He was known as an excellent carpenter and was an avid
hunter and fisherman. He especially enjoyed his perennial gardens.
He was a member of the Willimantic Moose Lodge #1400 for 36 years.
Besides his wife he is survived by a daughter, Heidi Meketsy of
Chaplin, a son, Eric Ausburger of North Windham, and his very loved
grandson, Jacob Meketsy of Chaplin. He is also survived by three
brothers and their wives, Henry and Deborah Ausburger of Scotland,
Ronald and Heidi Ausburger of Chaplin, Alan Ausburger of West
Virginia, three sisters and a brother-in-law, Carolyn and Theodore
Weyand of New Orleans, Louisiana, June Broadbent of Virginia, and
Jane Byrd of Willimantic, four sisters-in-law and three
brothers-in-law, Annette Grover, Terry and Tom Flynn, Paul and
Deborah Garceau, Jeanne and Conrad Labbe, a special nephew, Joshua
Ausburger, several other nephews, nieces, cousins, aunts and uncles.

Mildred Bender Babcock,
93, formerly of Bender Rd., Lebanon, passed away Tuesday Jan.
1, 2008 at Douglas Manor, Windham. She was born May 13, 1914
in Willimantic the daughter of Carl and Mary (Lord) Johnson.
Mildred had been employed by Bunnell Buick in Willimantic for
several years prior to her retirement. She previously had been
employed at Nathan Hale Hotel in Willimantic and Pleasant View
Lodge in Chaplin. She is survived by a daughter Jeanne
Vertefeuille and her husband Bert of Lebanon, a son Jack
Bender and his wife Susan of Lebanon, nine grandchildren,
sixteen great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren,
daughter in law Margaret Babcock of NY., son in law Roger
Racicot of Lebanon, brother in law Edward Bender and his wife

Ronald N. Babcock, 59, of
Lebanon, died Wednesday June 1, 2005, surrounded by his
children at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London,. He
was born September 9, 1945 in New Brunswick, Maine, the son of
the late Nelson and Anita (Bouchard) Babcock and had lived in
Lebanon most of his life. He was a graduate of Lyman Memorial
High School in Lebanon and a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam
War. Following his stint in the Navy, Ronald joined the
National Guard based at AVCRAD and his unit was activated for
participation in Operation Desert Storm. He was an avid coin
and stamp collector and also a music and history buff. He was
predeceased by the mother of his children and the love of his
life, Brenda Jean Birtles. He is survived by 5 children,
Steven of Coventry, Stacie of South Windsor, Shannon of
Hebron, Tabetha of Putnam and Eric of Lebanon, 10
grandchildren, Jason, Sarah, Derrick, Seth, Amanda, Elizabeth,
Katelynn, Abigail, Emily and Elijah and a great granddaughter,
Destinie. His family will receive friends at the Potter

Barabash, 79, of Goshen Hill Rd., Lebanon, died Wednesday
March 27, 2002 in Colchester. He was born April 14, 1922 in
Hartford the son of Stephen and Frances (Yarish) Barabash. He
was retired from Pratt & Whitney in E. Hartford. Harry
enjoyed woodworking and had a strong compassion for stray
animals. He is survived by his daughter and son in law Dianna
and Gene Naumec of New Hartford, a son Steven Barabash of
Brooksville, Fla., his loving companion of many years Cecile
Nadeau of Lebanon, 2 sisters Josephine Marcinow of Scotland

Frank Bartizek 1907 -

Frank
Bartizek, 94, of Lebanon, husband of Janice (Spellacy)
Bartizek, died Thursday March 7, 2002 in Willimantic. He was
born December 4, 1907 in Willimantic, the son of Joseph and
Mary (Rybarz) Bartizek. He attended Lebanon schools and
graduated from Lyman Memorial High School in 1925 and was the
oldest graduate of that class still living in Lebanon. He was
an avid sports fan throughout his life, playing basketball and
baseball in high school and on the "Town Team" for several
years after graduating. Mr. Bartizek retired from dairy
farming in 1977. Always active in community affairs, Mr.
Bartizek was elected to the Lebanon Board of Selectmen in 1938
and served for 19 years followed by 14 years as Chairman of
the Board of Education. He was a member and past trustee of
the First Baptist Church of Lebanon and a member of several
agricultural and soil conservation organizations at both local
and state levels. Mr. Bartizek was a charter and life member
of the Lebanon Volunteer Fire Department, a charter member of
the Lebanon Historical Society and was Republican Town
Chairman for 35 years. In addition to his wife whom he married
on April 7, 1947 he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law,
Robert and Ann Bartizek, a grandson Brian Bartizek, all of
Lebanon, Ohio, many nieces and nephews. In addition to his
parents he was predeceased by a son, Joseph, 3 brothers, John,
Louis and Albert and 2 sisters, Stella Swan and Rose Michalec.
Funeral services will be Monday at 11:00 a.m. at the Potter
Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St. (Rte. 195) Willimantic. Burial
will follow in the New Lebanon Cemetery. His family will

Phyllis H. Bartizek 1917 -
2004
Phyllis
(Hoxie) Bartizek of South Windham, widow of Albert Bartizek,
passed away Sept. 7, 2004 at Windham Memorial Hospital,
Willimantic. She was born March 4, 1917 in Norwich during a
snowstorm. Her parents were Dorothy (Gould) Hoxie and Albert
C. Hoxie of Lebanon. After graduating from Lyman Memorial High
School, Phyllis worked at American Thermos in Norwich. During
World War II she worked as an inspector at Pratt & Whitney
Aircraft. She chose to accompany her husband as he attended
officer training in the U.S. Army, then returned to
Connecticut when he went overseas. She devoted herself to her
family, baking, gardening around her property and an antiques
business operated with her husband. She had played on her high
school basketball team and became an avid fan of the UConn
women's team. She greatly enjoyed being with her friends and
was an enthusiastic supporter of the Lebanon Historical
Society. Phyllis is survived by her two sons and their wives,
Brian and Cora of South Windham and Ronald and Charlotte of
Dallas, Pa.; three grandchildren, Mark, Kathryn and Carl; a
sister, Justine Mencl of Palmyra, Maine; nieces and nephews,
and a former daughter-in-law, Olga Bartizek of Willimantic.
Calling hours will be Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Potter

M. Bassett 1951 - 2006
John M. Bassett, 55, of
Lebanon, husband of Laura (Bonor) Bassett, died Tuesday, June
20, 2006 in Windham after a long and courageous battle with
Mesothelioma, a type of cancer. He was born May 9, 1951 in
Hyannis, MA, the son of the late Miller and Georgianna
(Edwards) Bassett and had lived in Canterbury and Southington
before moving to Lebanon 4 years ago. He was a graduate of
Coventry High School, Manchester Community College, Hartford
State Technical School and was employed at Rogers Corporation
in Manchester before joining the Navy in 1971. He served
aboard the USS Richmond K. Turner (DLG-20) as an operations
specialist radar man from 1971 to 1975. He was employed at
Corometrics Medical Systems in Wallingford from 1978 to 2001
and at Electric Boat in Groton from 2001 to the present. John
loved nature, hiking, exploring and spending time at his
family’s Camp Bowman in New Hampshire. He enjoyed golf,
antiques and working with his hands. He was a perfectionist at
his woodworking. In addition to his wife he is survived by
Laura’s sons, Ryan, Justin and Joshua Messier of Lebanon and
Columbia, his siblings; Janet Niemi of Brockton, MA, Pamela
Burgess and her husband Charlie of Lisbon, Rachel Mackay of
Richmond, VA, Thomas Bassett and his wife Tina of Canterbury,
Timothy Bassett and his wife Susan of Windham, Sarah Glennon
and her husband James of Canterbury, his stepmother; Lorraine
Bassett, a granddaughter Emily, several nieces and nephews.

Linda J.
Bates, 43, of Lebanon, wife of Richard "Dick" Bates Jr. died
Monday March 18, 2002 at the W.W. Backus Hospital in Norwich.
She was born June 13, 1958 in Putnam, the daughter of Henry
Warren of Dayville, and the late Olive (Burgon) Warren and had
lived in Lebanon for the past 22 years. She grew up in
Pawcatuck and attended West Vine St. School in Stonington and
Windham High School. She loved to play Bingo, ride motorcycles
and travel, especially along the coast of Maine. In addition
to her husband and father she is survived by a son, Jonnie
Warren of Plainville, 3 brothers, Walter Burgon of Nebraska,
Richard and William Warren, both of Danielson, 2 sisters,
Cindy Harrington of Woodstock and Donna Bourque of Moosup, her
stepmother, Pauline Warren of Dayville, three dear friends,
Mary, Kay and Terry, many nieces and nephews. She was
predeceased by her son, B.J. Snelling. A graveside service
will be held Thursday at 11:00 a.m. in the New Lebanon

Arthur
Bender 1918 - 2003
Arthur Bender, 84, a
lifelong resident of Lebanon, went to his eternal home on
Friday May 23, 2003 at St. Joseph Living Center, Windham. He
was born July 6, 1918 the son of Johann and Justina
(Schachinger) Bender. He was a life member and past president
of the Redeemer Lutheran Church. One of his greatest pleasures
was grooming the lawn of the church and his property next
door. With the help of a former local radio station, Arthur
was instrumental in introducing the annual German Christmas
and Easter services held at the church. During the course of
his life, he worked as a farmer in Lebanon and also worked at
Pratt & Whitney, CL&P and Hamilton Standard. In 1959
he joined his brother Arnold at Bender's Oil Co. In 1970 he
became the sole owner and was later joined by his 3 sons who
took over the business at his retirement. Arthur was a charter
member of the Lebanon Volunteer Fire Dept. and was a Past
President and member of the Lebanon Lions Club for over 40
years. He had served on the Lebanon Board of Tax Review and on
the building committees for the first addition to the Lebanon
Elementary School and for the Town Hall. For many years, he
was a dedicated blood donor. Arthur enjoyed camping and
traveling with his wife Helen, covering all but 2 states of
the U.S.A., plus extensive travel in Europe. He was a charter
member of the German American Social Club of Willimantic and
was a member of the Gasthaus Dancers, a group of costumed
German shoe-slapping dancers who performed at nursing homes
and various clubs throughout New England. He is survived by
his wife Helen (Laibrandt) Bender. On May 30th they would have
celebrated their 57th anniversary. He is also survived by 4
sons ; Ronald and his wife Deborah, Charles, James and Kurt
and his wife Mary Beth, 5 grandchildren; Joanna, Daniel,
Maria, Scott and Joseph, a brother Edward and his wife Clara
and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his
brothers Walter and Arnold and a sister Helen Card Rogers. His

Edward M. Bender, 82, of
Lebanon, husband of Klara (Jung) Bender, died Wednesday Nov.
26, 2008 in Winter Haven, Florida. He was born Sept. 21, 1926
in Lebanon the son of Johann and Justina Bender and operated
Bender’s Farm for many years. He was a member of Connecticut
Milk Producers Assoc., Eastern Milk Production Assoc., Lebanon
Historical Society and Germans from Russia. Mr. Bender had
served Lebanon as a selectman, school bus driver, member of
the Board of Education, Justice of Peace and as a constable.
He also taught Sunday School at Redeemer Lutheran Church in
Lebanon. Ed enjoyed sports, especially basketball and
baseball. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three
sons, Karl of Middletown, Eric of Lebanon and Edward Jr. of
Lebanon, a daughter Nancy Kersh of Washington D.C., seven
grandchildren, a great grandson and several nieces and
nephews. His family will receive friends at Potter Funeral

Lillian (Krause) Bender, 96,
of Lebanon, wife of the late Arnold Bender, died Friday Aug.
5, 2005,at home surrounded by her family. She was born Aug.
19, 1908 in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. the daughter of Frederick and
Elizabeth (Jung) Krause and resided in Lebanon for most of her
life. Lily and her late husband Arnold established Bender’ s
Oil Service and Gas Station in Lebanon. She had been
previously employed at the American Thread Co. and the
Electro-Motive Manufacturing Co. Lily was a lifelong member of
the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Lebanon and had been president
of the Ladies Guild and also taught Sunday School. She was a
4-H Leader, charter member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the
Lebanon Volunteer Fire Dept., former president of the 60+ Bus
Service, member of the Windham Hospital Auxiliary, served on
the board of the McSweeney Senior Center and was a member of
the Lebanon Seniors. Lily was an avid card player with the
Lebanon Junior Seniors Setback Group and was well known in
Lebanon as an avid Yankees fan. She was predeceased by her
daughter and son in law, Elizabeth (Bender) Howard and Robert
Howard of Orange Park, FL. She is survived by 4 daughters,
Dorothy (Bender) Stevens of Lebanon, Barbara (Bender) Manning
and her husband Charles of Mohawk, N.Y., Marion (Bender) Russo
and her husband Roland of Lebanon and Linda (Bender) Russo and
her husband Robert of Lebanon; 2 brothers, Arnold Krause and
Harold Krause of Lebanon, 18 grandchildren and 26 great
grandchildren. Her family will receive friends at the Potter
Funeral Home 456 Jackson St. (Rte. 195) Willimantic on Monday
between 5:00 and 8:00pm. Her funeral service will be held at
the Redeemer Lutheran Church, Village Hill Rd., Lebanon on
Tuesday at 2:00pm with the Rev. Scott Schuett officiating.
Burial will follow in the New Lebanon Cemetery. In lieu of
flowers, memorial donations are suggested to the Arnold Bender

Wally was
a very caring, generous, considerate and loving person, always
willing to lend a helping hand. He entertained his friends
with his great sense of humor, which he maintained to the end.
He is survived by his brothers Russell and Douglas, their
wives Jonica and Beverly, several nieces and nephews and many
great nieces and nephews. Calling hours will not be held. Rev.
Fred Wright will officiate at the funeral which will be held
at the Goshen Congregational Church, Lebanon on Wednesday at
2:00pm. He will be interred in his hometown of Lebanon in the
New Lebanon Cemetery beside his first wife Eleanor.

Blakeslee 1927 - 2006
Wallace P. Blakeslee Jr. of Bakersfield, CA.
formerly of Lebanon, CT., went to be with the Lord on November
1, 2006 after a battle with cancer. Wally was the oldest of
four children born on Feb. 22, 1927 to Wallace P. Blakeslee
Sr. and Delia Gray Blakeslee. He grew up on a farm in Lebanon
CT and often reminisced about the days when he arose early to
milk cows and deliver newspapers before going to school. His
high school graduation class was the smallest in the entire
history of Lyman Memorial High School with eleven
students. Wally joined the U.S. Air Force right out of high
school in 1944. During his tour of duty he was in Germany as
part of the Berlin Airlift. He began his career in the cotton
industry working for the American Thread Co. in Willimantic CT
where he soon became supervisor of his department. Later on,
he was involved in buying and selling cotton and warehouse
management. This resulted in his being transferred to New York
City, Fresno and a final move to Bakersfield in 1969. Wally
enjoyed playing golf for a number of years with his great
golfing buddies. He received his pilot’s license, bought his
own airplane and made several cross country trips. He flew
many times with Erroll Williams. Wally was married to
Eleanor Harvey for 48 years. They had no children. Eleanor
passed away in 1999. Wally met his second wife, Audrey Rowe,
at First Presbyterian Church in Bakersfield CA, they were
married in 2001 and had a wonderful five years
together. Wally received the Mason of the year award from
Muedell-Oildale Masonic Lodge #695 in 2004 for his
contribution to the Child I.D. Program. He was also a member
of Scottish Rite and the Kern County Shrine Club. Wally was
a very caring, generous, considerate and loving person, always

2005
Ruth L. Blay, 84, of
Scotland, wife of Clayton Blay, died Saturday April 23, 2005 at
their home. She was born April 16, 1921 in Waterbury, the daughter
of Paul and Lillian (Adkins) Garthwait and had lived in Lebanon and
Vermont for many years before moving to Scotland. She was employed
at the former Electro-Motive Mfg. Co. in Willimantic and most
recently at Ridges Outlet, also in Willimantic. She enjoyed various
crafts, gardening and sewing. In addition to her husband she is
survived by 4 sons and daughters-in-law, John and Dawn Drum of
Lebanon, Francis and Susan Drum of Colchester, Ron and Barbara Drum
of Lebanon, Richard and Barbara Drum of Scotland, a brother, William
Garthwait of Windsor, a sister, Lillian Kablik of Lebanon, a
sister-in-law, Velma Garthwait of Lebanon, 11 grandchildren, 3 great
grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a
son, Russell Drum and 2 brothers, Donald and Kenneth Garthwait. Her
family will receive friends at the Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson
St., Rte. 195, Willimantic on Wednesday from 6 :00 to 8:00 p.m.
Funeral services will be at the funeral home Thursday at 11:00 a.m.

BRAMAN, Robert V. died on Friday May 16, 2008. He was the son of
Rollo Warren and Flora Mae (Barney) Braman born on November 8, 1915
in Torrington. He attained Eagle Scout with Bronze Palm in 1932 and
graduated from Farmington High School in 1934. He attended the
Citadel in Charleston, SC, participating in football and track. He
joined the United States Marine Corps, becoming a drill instructor
before serving in the South Pacific during World War II. He owned
and operated the Armored Car Company and worked for Connecticut
Natural Gas Company in Hartford as an energy consultant retiring
from that position at age 67. He is survived by his wife, Frances
King Braman, and eight children from two previous marriages; Barbara
Kelly, Douglas Braman, Lois Albert, Richard Braman, David Braman and
Janice Smith from his first marriage to Arlene Miner Braman, and
also Liliane Boyd and Lisa Braman from his second marriage to
Liliane Taillon Braman. He leaves 13 grandchildren and six great
grandchildren. He was stepfather to five children of his wife,
Frances; Lawrence Sawyer, Joanne Hutchinson, Richard Holmes,
Frederick Sawyer and Peter Sawyer and numerous generations of
grandchildren. After serving more than 50 years in the First Company
Governor's Foot Guard, he left as Executive Officer, retiring with
the rank of Major and life member; he participated and instructed
for the rifle and pistol teams. He was also a member of the Ale
& Garden Society affiliated with the Governor's Foot Guard. He
competed for 20 years with New England police teams and was a
Connecticut Hunter Safety Instructor for the State of Connecticut.
Mr. Braman was a Master Mason attaining 32nd Degree; a Sojourner,
and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign War, American Legion
and Hunters of North America. In addition, he was a member of the
Sons of the American Revolution. He enjoyed traveling and seeing
much of the United States, including over 1,000 miles of canoeing, a
favorite sport. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 24,
at 1 p.m. at the Gilead Congregational Church, 672 Gilead Street,
Hebron. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Memorial
donations may be made to The First Company Governor's Foot Guard, P.
O. Box 1771, Hartford, CT 06144 to the General
Fund.

Dorothy M. Brown June 30, 1906 -
October 23, 1999
Dorothy Marguerite Brown, 93, of Hayward Avenue,
Colchester, died peacefully at home with her family by her side on
Saturday (October 23, 1999). She was born on June 30, 1906 in
Boston, MA, a daughter of the late Robert Paine and Ada Gertrude
(Atwood) Palmer. She was raised and educated in Massachusetts,
graduating from Upton High School, as well as the Framingham Normal
School, where she graduated in 1927 with a degree in teaching. In
1932, she married Harold Frederick Brown (who served asFire Chief
for 30 years with the Colchester Hayward Volunteer Fire Department).
Mr. Brown died in August of 1970. Mrs. Brown's distinguished 44-year
teaching career began in Lebanon at the Abell School, a
one-room schoolhouse for grades one through eight. She returned to
Boston and taught there for two years, while caring for her ailing
mother. Upon returning to Connecticut, Mrs. Brown settled into a
teaching position in the Colchester Public school system that would
take her to retirement, after 38 years of service. Mrs. Brown also
served as a past president of the Teachers Union for the Colchester
Schools and in 1998, received the distinguished Kappa Delta Gamma
International Society Award for service in excess of 25 years. Mrs.
Brown was a member of the Colchester Federated Church, where she was
also a past Deaconess. Her survivors include two children, Frederick
P. Brown and his wife, Patricia of Colchester, Janice Adams of
Colchester; a brother, Robert Palmer and his wife, Jean of Colon,MI;
10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. In addition to her
husband and parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Hazel Norris;
a brother, Edger Palmer; and a grandson, Jeff Brown. Funeral
services will be held on Thursday, October 28, 2 p.m.,at the
Colchester Federated Church. Burial will follow in Exeter
Cemetery in Lebanon. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday,
October 27, 2:30-4 and 7-8:30 p.m., at the Aurora-McCarthy Funeral
Home, 167 Old Hartford Road, Colchester. The family requests that

Of Lebanon, formerly of East Hartford, beloved
wife of Steven, passed away Wednesday afternoon (Dec. 22, 2004) at
home, surrounded by her loving family after a long, courageous
battle with cancer. She was born in Lewiston, ME, a daughter of the
late Arthur and Collette (Grant) Borey. She grew up in Dorchester,
MA and moved to CT in 1974. Joan was a longtime employee of
Liturgical Publications, Inc. of Cromwell, and taught typing in the
South Windsor Adult Education Program. In 1988, she earned an
Associate's Degree in Communications from Manchester Community
College, and she later worked toward her Bachelor's Degree at
Central Connecticut State University. In addition to her first
priority, her family, Joan was involved in several community
organizations, such as the Girl Scouts, in which she served as a
troop leader. She volunteered for several years as a cameraperson
for the East Hartford Cable Access Channel, and also took part in
the annual East Hartford Lions Club Flower Sale for many years. She
is survived by the love of her life, and her best friend, Steven A.
Crecco, to whom she was married for 34 years, two loving children,
Diana Crecco of Newington and David Crecco of East Hartford; her two
beloved grandchildren, Anthony and David Crecco and their mother
Dashiris Serrano of Manchester; a sister Elaine Gibbons of
Marshfield, MA; a brother A. James Borey of Ayer, MA; her niece
Christine Mortell of Arlington, MA; her niece and nephew, Lauren
Lantagne and Mark Lovallo and their mother Diane Lovallo of Salem,
NH; her brother-in-law Victor Crecco and his wife Christine of
Stonington and their family. The family wishes to extend its deepest
appreciation to Dr. Dominic Pasquale and the staff of the Cancer
Center of St. Francis Hospital for Joan's care and treatment over
the past 13 years, as well as Kathy Killarney, RN, of VNA East for
her compassionate care as Joan's Hospice nurse. The family would
also like to thank Joan's many friends, especially Donna Willard,
and the folks from the "Mirth" Group, for always being there for
Joan. Friends may call Monday (Dec. 27th) from 5 to 8 PM at the
Aurora-McCarthy Funeral Home, 167 Old Hartford Rd., COLCHESTER, CT.
The Funeral will assemble 9 AM Tuesday morning at the Funeral Home
before the celebration of the Funeral Liturgy at 10 AM Tuesday at
St. Francis of Assisi Church, West Town St., Lebanon, with Fr. Brian
