James W.
Allard, 62, of Storrs, CT passed away
unexpectedly Tuesday, August 15, 2006. He was
born in Burlington, VT to Lucien and Emma
(Joyal) Allard on November 28, 1943. Jim
is survived by his loving wife Laurie after an
incredible 14 years together. He adored his
daughter Renee Allard of Boston, MA and cherished
his 4 stepchildren as his own - Phillip
Christopher of Storrs, CT; Megan Christopher of
Santa Barbara, CA; Nicole (Christopher) and her
husband Scott Mraz of Santa Barbara, and Bryce
Christopher of Boston, MA. He leaves his siblings
Charles (Bud) and wife Mary Allard of Essex
Junction, VT; Patricia and husband Richard Kingman
of St. Albans, VT; Bruce and wife Donna Allard of
Saratoga, NY; and twin brother Paul and wife Jean
Allard of Essex Junction, VT. Nieces and nephews
include David and wife Lisa Allard of Queensbury,
NY; Joanne and husband Raymond Stygles of Essex
Junction, VT; Karen and husband Dwight Rolston of
Colchester, VT; Julie Allard of Saratoga, NY; and
Kathleen and husband Alex Bazineau of Sault Ste.
Marie, MI; and 15 great-nieces and nephews. He
also leaves many good friends, colleagues, and
hundreds of students whose lives he touched at E.
O. Smith High School. Jim served as a member of
the Air Force from 1962-1966 as an Air Police in
the canine division. After finishing his tour of
duty, Jim went on to earn a Bachelors degree in
Business Education from Castleton State College, a
Masters degree in Business and Vocational
Education at the University of Connecticut, and a
fifth year degree in Professional Education from
the University of Connecticut. Teaching was
Jim’s passion. Anyone who knew Jim, knew he loved
spending his days in the classroom teaching his
“kids.” He taught law and business at E. O. Smith
High School in Storrs, CT for 35 years. Jim’s
students, both past and present, saw Jim as much
more than just a teacher; he was a confidante, a
mentor and most importantly, a friend. He inspired
many of his students to go on and pursue careers
in law and business. This passion and love for
teaching translated into many awards and
recognitions such as the Mark R. Shedd Award for
Excellence in Educating Young People About the Law
from the Connecticut Consortium for Law and
Citizenship Education, Recognition of excellence
in teaching high school students from the UC
Alumni Association and 2005 Regional School
District #19 Teacher of the Year from the
Connecticut State Board of Education. In his own
words, “a teacher is like an entertainer” and
“must instill interest in their audience in order
to maintain their attention.” Jim was an
innovator in the classroom, always inventing new
and exciting ways to teach his students. One of
his proudest accomplishments during his tenure at
E.O. Smith, was the development and implementation
of the first Mock Trial Club at E.O. Smith. 27
years later, students still compete in this
prestigious competition. When he wasn’t
teaching in the classroom, Jim was enjoying many
of his other hobbies, such as playing golf,
writing his novel, entertaining his family and
friends with songs from Johnny Mathis, Neil
Diamond and Elvis Presley, skiing with his
students in the winter, and cheering on his
beloved UCONN Huskies. Jim always
surrounded himself with friends and family who
loved him dearly and he will be missed by many.
Today we celebrate a life well lived. In lieu of
flowers, memorial donations may be made to a
scholarship fund which will be established. Funds
should be sent in memory of James Allard, to E.O.
Smith School Bank, 1235 Storrs Rd., Storrs, CT.

Albert Culp Bollen
of Storrs completed his life's work on
January 21, 2003. Al was born on June 22, 1909, in
Marsden, Oklahoma, to Henry J. and Clara (Culp)
Bollen,
two years after Oklahoma
became a state. He moved with his family at an
early age to New Mexico where he attended the
local schools. He was a childhood friend of the
Fred Harvey family, food industry pioneers. While
still a child, Al helped to launch their
innovative rail side food service business by
ringing the dinner bell to announce to arriving
passengers that the enterprising Harveys were
standing ready to satisfy their appetites. In
1932, he married May Durham in Albuquerque, New
Mexico. They had three children, Albert Jr.,
Eugene, and Mary Anne. In 1969, May died in Storrs
after a prolonged illness. On April 1, 1971, Al
married Mary Margaret Meloche Rumney, in

headed to New York City to found a consulting firm
with two partners. During this time he established
a relationship with the University of Connecticut.
In 1950, Al was recruited by the University to
become Director of Food Services. His knowledge
and expertise in the industry proved invaluable in
establishing the food service system at the
rapidly expanding University with its various
satellite campuses. He continued to oversee and
direct operations until retiring in 1976. Al
was an active member of the community as a charter
member of the Mansfield Lions Club. In 1999, he
