We understand that Michael Monahon who was under sentence of death for the crime of murdering a woman in Wilmington, whose guilt was clearly made out in court and who having asked for a reprieve about the first day of May, obtained it on the ground of his earnest wish to prepare to die, has been pardoned by Governor Paynter. The pardon arrived at Newcastle as the Sheriff and his guards were about to lead out the Criminal to execution. The fact has created a general feeling of surprise and even indignation in the community, especially in that part of it most acquainted with the circumstances of the case and the evidence adduced on the trial. A murderer is now let loose to renew his depredations upon Society! -- Democratic Press
