Ashland B. Swiggett
Ashland B. Swiggett, one of the youngest and first volunteers of the civil war from Delaware and for many years an employe of the pension office, to which he was appointed by President Lincoln, personally, died yesterday morning, following an attack of paralysis. Mr. Swiggett was born in Sussex County. Del., in 1845. When the war began, though only 16 years old, he insisted on entering the army, and became a private in the First Delaware infantry. He served conspicuously at Antietam, where he received six wounds. He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Cornelia Woolman, who came on from New York some days ago, and a nephew, S. A. Swiggett, of this city. The Rev. W. R. Wedderspoon, of Foundry M. E. Church will will officiate at the funeral which will be held at Lee's Chapel tomorrow at 4 p. m. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Benjamie Butler
