De Soto
County Information The original
DeSoto County seat, which had also served Manatee County since 1866,
was located at Pine Level. Although apparently built of brick, the Pine
Level courthouse, or at least its jail, was derided as "flimsy,"
allowing the escape of prisoners to such an extent that vigilantism
was rampant in the large and undeveloped county. Ghost town researcher
James Warnke has located the site of this structure, but reports that
only a few bricks remain beneath the shade of an oak hammock. The current
DeSoto County Courthouse was built by the Read-Parker Construction Company
in 1912-3. It was designed by the Tampa architectural firm of Bonfoey

This County website needs a dedicated host to make it the best site that it can be! If you think that you may be interested in volunteering to host a county or state please view our Volunteer Information page here and email Kim. (A desire to transcribe data and the know-how to make a basic webpage is required) Join our mailing lists for researchers looking to connect and share information. You never know who you might meet and what family data they may share with you -- it could start a whole new branch of the family! We also use the mailing lists to announce our website updates. Florida is covered under the South-Eastern Region Mailing List Remember to look around at the other states and consider donating your source information -- every little bit helps someone. |
