Marvin W. Wherrell Jr.
OKEECHOBEE- - Okeechobee County Commissioner Marvin W. Wherrell Jr. died Tuesday night, leaving a void on the commission and in the community.
"He thought he could make a difference in Okeechobee County," daughter Dixie Ball said of her father, who was 64. She said he died suddenly from a heart ailment.
Mr. Wherrell owned Wherrell Auto Parts in Okeechobee for 37 years before selling it and retiring a few years ago, Ball said. The store burned down in the early 1990s, but Mr. Wherrell relocated it.Mr. Wherrell, who was born in Arcadia, grew up in Okeechobee and got into
politics late in life, said County Commissioner Noel Chandler, who went to high school with Mr. Wherrell. He was elected to the commission's District 4 seat with 55 percent of the vote in November 2006. Ball said her father wanted to see the county grow without losing its small-town character. Chandler said he was going to run for office anyway in 2006, and Mr. Wherrell decided to run as well after the two talked about things they wanted to do to make the county run better.
Chandler said the residents of District 4 can submit names to the county to nominate Mr. Wherrell's replacement, and Gov. Charlie Crist will choose the new commissioner. He said the commission will probably hold meetings with only four commissioners until February to honor Mr. Wherrell.
Mr. Wherrell is survived by his wife, Sandra; son, Chad; Ball; and two grandchildren, all of Okeechobee.Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church of Okeechobee, where Mr. Wherrell was a deacon. A funeral service will be held at noon.
