Date: 1910-10-28; Paper: Macon Telegraph Athens Ga., May 3,—More mystery developed tonight In the case of R. W. McKinney who shot his wife to death and suicided immediately Monday night. Austin McKinney, of Chester, near Spartanburg, S. C. phoned Mayor Rowe tonight that R. W. McKinney ran away from Spartanburg County six years ago with the woman he killed this week and that she was not and has never been his lawful wife, that his wife and six children, deserted by him in 1905, are living now. An hour later a Mrs. McKinney called the mayor of Athens and asked if the McKinney couple had been burled here and upon being informed that the burial had occurred, she refused to give her own first name and stated that she would write more fully later. Still later a wire from Leonard McKinney at Cowpens, S. C. instructs that the orphan girl be sent to him at once, There is doubt as to the child's being a daughter of the dead man at all. There is insurance on the lives of both the victims of Monday's shooting amounting to $2,000. A brother and a sister of the dead woman were here for the burial and wished to carry the bodies back to Carolina for Interment, They disagreed and finally compromised on burying the man here and carrying their sister back to Laurens. Rev. S. E. England, pastor of one of the churches here, has been named by the ordinary to care for the girl and her property, and the sister and brother agreed for both bodies to be buried in Athens. They have decided to allow the child to be sent to an orphan's asylum Instead of taking her back home with them as they first declared they would do.
