HOW THE COUNTY WAS FORMED


In 1832 with added parts of Habersham and Hall the county of Cherokee was divided into-10 counties: Cass, Cherokee, Cobb, Forsyth, Gilmer, Lumpkin, Murray, Paulding, Walker and Floyd.

By a legislative act in 1832, assented to December 3, Cass county was formed from parts of the 21st, 22nd, end 23rd districts of the second section; the 4th, 5th, 6th, 15th, 16th, and 17th districts of the third section.

Cass was named for General Lewis Cass, born in Exter, New Hampshire. He was admitted to the bar in 1802; in 1831 was made secretary of war by President Jackson, a commissioner to Paris; in 1845 was elected to U. S. senate; in 1848 nominated for presidency but was defeated.

In 1834 part of Murray along the Oostanaula river in the 24th district was added to Cass.

In 1843 lot No. 210 in the 16th district of Cass was added to Floyd.

In 1845 lot No. 80, and lots owned by certain persons on the county lines of Floyd and Cass, in the 15th and 16th districts, were added to Floyd.

In 1850 a residence lot owned in Cass by Thomas O. Christian became a part of Murray.

In 1850 a new county, called Gordon, was formed from parts of the 24th, 7th and 14th districts of Cass.

In 1852 lots Nos. 181, 183, 150, 151, 120, 121, 90, 91, 60, 61, 30, 31 and 1, in the 16th district, between the county lines of Cass and Floyd were added to Floyd.

In 1852 two lots, Nos. 35 and 36, in the 18th district of Paulding, were added to Cass.

In 1852 lots Nos. 27 and 28, along the county line of Cass and Polk, in the 18th district, were added to Cass.

In 1852 a lot,No. 136, in the 23rd district, on county lines of Cass and Gordon, was added to Gordon.

In 1854 on the county lines of Cass and Gordon residence lots and a lot, No. 21, in the 15th district, were added to Gordon.

In 1854 lots Nos. 33, 34, and 40, on county line of Cass and Paulding, in the 18th district, were added to Cass.

In 1855 lots Nos. 22 and 39, in the 15th district of Floyd and Nos. 130 in the 15th district of Cass, were added to Gordon.

In 1856 a lot, No. 81, on county line of Cass and Gordon in 15th district, was included in Gordon.

In 1856 lot No. 298, in 23rd district of Cherokee on line between Cass and Cherokee, was added to Cass.

In 1860 lot No. 1282, in the 17th district of Cass, was added to Polk.

In 1869 lot No. Ill, in the 15th district of Bartow on a line dividing the counties of Bartow and Gordon, was included in Gordon.

Bartow is now bounded on the north by Gordon, on the east by Cherokee, on the south by small portions of Cobb, Paulding and Polk, on the west by Floyd.
