IN THE HANDS OF A
MOB
Five Young Men at
DawsonvilIe Ga., Defy the Marshal and Citizens.
Gainesville, [Ga],
Sept. 18.—Dawsonville was in the hands of a mob Tuesday night. Dale and
John Castleberry,
Will Mahan, Asa Slatton and Herbert Omen, had been paying attention
to a certain young women who did not reciprocate the tender
feeling, while the attention of Messrs. Nat Ware, the son of the
minister, and John Martin was acceptable. Tuesday night
the five young men attacked Ware and Martin and commenced to fire
pistols. Fifteen
shots
were exchanged. In the midst of the firing the Rev. Mr.
Ware appeared with a shot gun and turned both barrels loose in the
direction of the hiding parties. The five assailants walked to
the public square, pistols in hand, where they openly defied the
marshal and citizens.
A street fight took
place, and finally the citizens retired, leaving the "boys" in
possession. Warrants have been sworn out for the entire gang,
charging them with conspiracy and assault with intent to murder.
