Douglasville Star
There died in this county, on the 25th instant, quite a notorious
character. We refer to W. B. Smith, more generally known as Doctor
Smith. He died to the ripe old age of seventy-three. In his youth he
was a large portion of his time among the Creek Indians, and quite
intimate with their great medicine men. From these, like Edwin Eastman,
he claimed to have learned the secret ingredients of many valuable
remedies, and especially one for the cure of cancers. Although he was a
very illiterate man, many people had implicit faith in his powers as a
physician as well as a conjurer, m the capacity of both of which he
frequently practised. Many people from all portions of Georgia and of
East Alabama, have come to this county to be treated by him. Of
his cures we know nothing. He had been gradually falling for the last
year, and finally died
from the effects of old age. During his last illness he would take no
medicine except that of his own manufacture.

At Douglasville Tuesday morning, while Eula, the twelve year-old
daughter of D. W. Price was standing jn front of the fire her dress
caught fire. She ran Into the yard, screaming, and her mother after
her. She then ran into the house, where Mrs, B. C. Griggs, with great
presence of mind, threw a quilt around her and finally extinguished the
flames. The little girl was badly burned all over her body, and, after
suffering great agony, died.

W. P. Webb Dies At Douglasville
W. P. Webb, of Douglasville, Ga., died at his residence there Friday
evening, according to information received here. He was the father of
Miss Mary Webb, secretary for the Business and Industrial Girls club of
the Young Women's Christian association. Other survivors are his
widow, two other daughters, Miss Helen Webb and Miss Tommy Webb of
Douglasville, and a son Toombs Webb, who is serving with the United
States Army in Alaska.

An 18-year-old Douglasville youth, Richard Dickenson, died Sunday when
his car ran off Georgia Highway 5 and plunged into a lake four miles
south of Douglasville.

Thirty of the two-state death toll were recorded in Georgia and seven
in South Carolina. Four persons died in a single accident near
Douglasville Christmas night.
The State Patrol identified the four killed in the one-car wreck in
Douglas County as Michael Parker. Ray Bell.
Freddie Parson and Glenn Goff, all of Douglas County and all in their
early20s.The accident occurred on Georgia 5 seven miles south of
Douglasville
Two persons identified as John Willie Gladden of Macon and Mary Frances
Towns. 67. of Ft. Valley died when their car ran into the rear of
another vehicle Saturday night on Georgia 49 in Byron.

Earl C. Moore
Earl C. Moore of 11 Forrest Trail, Douglasville Ga. died Thursday in an
Augusta hospital. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Elliott
Sons Funeral Home,Telfair Street.

Mrs. Marjorie Raborn
Sylvania, Ga. - Mrs. Marjorie Raborn, 65, Route 6. died Monday in
Douglasville Ga. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today at Bay Branch
Baptist Church with the Rev. Jordan Holland officiating. Burial will be
in the church cemetery. Mrs Raborn was a native of Screven County and a
member of Bay Branch Baptist Church. Survivors include one daughter Mrs
Lynnette Pruitt, Douglasville, Ga . and her mother, Mrs. Lexie Brown,
Sylvania. Pallbearers will be George O Zeager, Bernard Zeagler, Danny
Brownlee, Coleman Waten, Lloy Brinson and Bobby Pruitt Friends may call
at Jarrell Funeral Home.

John Adams
Douglasville Ga. — John Adams, 75, died Saturday in Douglasville
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. today .in Wrens City Cemetery,
Wrens. Ga.. with Drs. Amplus Howard and Julian West officiating.
Survivors include his wife. Christine Adams; a daughter. Mrs MO. (Jane)
Edmonds. Fort Monroe. Va.: a son. John Gordon Adams, Douglasville; and
two sisters, Mary Brown. Wrens, and Martha Cox. Auburn, Ky.
Pallbearers will be Jonathan Adams. Harvey Adams. Bob Adams. Bryan
Brown. Mark Edmonds and Neal Edmonds. M.W. Callaway and Sons. Wrens, is
in charge of local arrangements.

Clattie O. Redd
Windsor, S.C, - Clattie O. Redd. 81, Route 1, died Thursday
in Douglasville, Ga.
The funeral woll be at 3 p.m. Sunday at George Funeral Home, Aiken,
with the Rev. Colie Scarborough officiating. Burial will be in
Mount Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Redd was a lifelong resident of Aiken County and a retired merchant
after 41 years. He attended Mount Beulah Baptist Church for 61 years
and also was a member of First Baptist Church, Aiken, where he was
involved in the Men's Senior Bible Class.
Survivors include his wife, Dora Cothran Redd; and two stepdaughters,
Mary Turner, Portland, Ore., and Lynn Larsen, Douglasville.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral
home.

Mrs, Sarah A. Leache
Douglasville, Ga. - Mrs. Saran Agnes Leache died Friday in Douglasville
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Sims Funeral Home. Douglas.
Burial will be in Douglas City Cemetery. Mrs. Leache was a native of
Coffee County and a former resident of Augusta.
Survivors include a daughter. Mrs. W.T. (Virginia B.) Garrett,
Douglasville and a brother, Bryan McKinnon, Willacoochee. The family
will receive friends at Whitley-Gamer Funeral Home today and Sims
Funeral Home Sunday

Douglasville Ga. — Ms. Mildred Heath DeVane died Saturday. Oct. 22.1994.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Valley Baptist Church,
Riverdale. Burial will be at 4 p.m. in Hillcrest Cemetery, Augusta.
Survivors include a son Clayton Heath, Douglasville a brother,
Lloyd Paschal, Appling; and two grandchildren. Whitney-Gamer Funeral

Samuel Hoffine
The remains of Samuel Hoffine, 66 years of age, whose death occurred
Tuesday at the home of his son, Amiel Hoffine, of Douglasville, Ga.,
where placed in Harry G. Poole’s chapel Wednesday morning to allow
relatives in Atlanta to view them. At 2:45 p.m. they were sent to
Greenboro, N. C., for funeral and interment. The Atlanta Georgian And

Dies After Long Illness
Douglasville, Ga., June 1 – O. P. Brown, marshal of Douglasville, one
of the most prominent young men in this section, died here yesterday
morning, after an illness of four months.
He first suffered from an attack of meningitis and afterwards from
pneumonia fever. He was 33 years of age and unmarried.
The funeral occurred here today at 3:30 o’clock.
