Still
Had Shackles on When Captured. The Negro Who Took French Leave from
Fayetteville, Found in Macon
Heavy chains, shackles and prison bars at the convict camp at
Fayetteville, did not deter Joe Brown in his efforts to escape, for
when he was arrested in Macon Sunday morning by Policemen Jessup and
Wilson, the shackles were still on his legs.
The record books at the Bibb County chain-gang show that the negro
completed a ten-year sentence for burglary in this county about a year
ago.
The authorities at Fayetteville were communicated with and an officer
from that place will arrive in Macon today to carry the negro back to
the camp.
The Macon officers received a tip several days ago that the escape was
in the city and yesterday traced him to the Colonial Hotel.
He at first denied that he was an escape, but when he was searched at
police headquarters and the shackles were found on his legs, he
confessed, stating that although he had succeeded in breaking the chain
lie bad not been able to unfasten the shackles.
