Jeff Davis County, Georgia History
Jeff Davis County is a county located in the U.S. state of Georgia. It
was created on August 18, 1905. As of 2000, the population was 12,684.
It was named for the only President of the Confederate States of
America, Jefferson Davis. The 2007 Census Estimate showed a population
of 13,291. The county seat is Hazlehurst.
Geography
According to the 2000 census, the county has a total area of 335.42
square miles (868.7 km2), of which 333.38 square miles (863.5 km2) (or
99.39%) is land and 2.04 square miles (5.3 km2) (or 0.61%) is water.

Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 12,684 people, 4,828 households,
and 3,592 families residing in the county. The population density was
38 people per square mile (15/km²). There were 5,581 housing units
at an average density of 17 per square mile (6/km²). The racial
makeup of the county was 81.20% White, 15.14% Black or African
American, 0.24% Native American, 0.44% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander,
2.39% from other races, and 0.55% from two or more races. 5.13% of the
population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 4,828 households out of which 35.70% had children under the
age of 18 living with them, 56.50% were married couples living
together, 13.60% had a female householder with no husband present, and
25.60% were non-families. 22.30% of all households were made up of
individuals and 9.10% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age
or older. The average household size was 2.61 and the average family
size was 3.02.
In the county the population was spread out with 27.20% under the age
of 18, 9.30% from 18 to 24, 28.20% from 25 to 44, 23.30% from 45 to 64,
and 11.90% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35
years. For every 100 females there were 96.50 males. For every 100
females age 18 and over, there were 93.60 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $27,310, and the
median income for a family was $30,930. Males had a median income of
$26,261 versus $20,095 for females. The per capita income for the
county was $13,780. About 16.80% of families and 19.40% of the
population were below the poverty line, including 21.70% of those under
age 18 and 22.10% of those age 65 or over.
