Hazelhurst Man Charged With Poisoning His Wife's Family.
IN ORDER TO GET WIFE'S INHERITANCE
Patrick Ursery Held on Charge —Strychnine Found in Flour—Analysis Made
by Atlanta Chemist—Big Sensation in Hazelhurst
Atlanta. Ga.. Nov. M.—(Special.)—
Strychnine, in sufficient quantity to annihilate half a hundred people,
was found in the analysis of the flour sent to Atlanta from Hazelhurst.
following arrest there of Patrick Ursery, a prominent resident of the
town, charged with attempting to poison the entire family of his wife
to gain her inheritance. The analysis was completed by Dr. Edgar
Everhart, of the Atlanta College of physicians and Surgeon, late this
afternoon, and reported to Dr. W. M. Girtman. of Hazelhurst who
attended Mrs. Ursery's father; Jesse C. Ross a wealthy farmer. and
other members of his family. The Ross family has not as yet
completely recovered from the illness with which they were stricken
immediately after Ursery's visits there several weeks ago.
Dr Girtman left Atlanta immediately with the report and it is expected
that an immediate prosecution of Ursery will be made.
The circumstance under which the poison charge was made, proved to be
the greatest sensation ever produced in Hazelhurst. Only a short time
after Ursery marriage to the daughter of the Ross family every member
became ill their conditions being so serious it was thought for a time
that all would die. The suspicions circumstances led to an
Investigation and Ursery was placed under arrest He made emphatic
protest of his innocence and his bride was disposed to stand loyally by
him in the first accusation. S. D. Dela, attorney for Ursery. declared
that there is no
doubt of the man's innocence are that suspicion had been directed
toward him only through an unfortunate combination of circumstances.
