It was created
on February 20, 1796.
The county seat is Lincolnton, Georgia
On February 20, 1796 Lincoln County became the twenty fourth county in
the state of Georgia. Before then it was part of Wilkes county which is
just west of Lincoln County. Lincoln County was named after an American
patriot from the revolutionary war named General Benjamin Lincoln. He
was born in Hingham, Massachusetts in 1733, and also played a big role
in the John Burgoyne’s campaign. Some say in a very popular myth that
he played a major role in the surrender of Yorktown in 1781. In 1809 he
retired and soon died in 1810.
