DROWNED AT COLUMBUS – Two Prominent Young Men
of Georgia Go to Their Death in the River
A fatal accident occurred on the river front in Columbus, Ga. Sunday
afternoon. A party of young men were out in oats enjoying a row,
when George Mason and Joseph Hanserd,
who were in one boat, rowed too near the strong dam at the City mill
and the frail craft was drawn violently by the suction against the
rocks. The boat was stove in and mason and Hanserd were sucked
under. Hanserd disappeared and Mason rose to the surface and was
rescued by the other boats. His face was badly bruised by coming
in contact with the rocks and he was filled with water, but has
recovered. Up to a late hour the body of Hanserd had not been
recovered. He belonged to one of the oldest and best known
families of Columbus. He leaves a widowed mother and several
sisters.
