JACOBS
CUTHBERT April 13.—The body or D. M. Jacobs who died at his home in this city Thursday afternoon, was carried to Brooklyn, N Y last night for interment. Mr, Jacob illness has been for more than a year and has baffled the skill of some of the most eminent specialists In the United States. His death is a distinct loss to the business and social interests of Cuthbert. He was one of the largest dry goods merchants in this section of Georgia, up, to date In his methods and very popular with the trading public. Personally he was popular, progressive end wide awake to the interests of the town, was very liberal and one of the most charitable men in Cuthbert
He was held In the highest confidence of the people, being the vice president of the Bank of Cuthbert, trustee of the city public school, was formerly mayor of Cuthbert and for several terms in alderman, he is survived by a widow and two children. Mrs. Dave Robinson, of Savannah and Mrs. P Harris, of Albany, are sisters, and J J Kalmon, of Albany is a half brother to the decedent.

FUNERAL OF MISS STELLA SIMPSON.
CUTHBERT. Ga., April   12.—The funeral services of Miss Stella Simpson occurred this morning, from the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C, N. Simpson, and were conducted by Dr. Ashby Jones, of the First Baptist church, Augusta, of which church, Miss Simpson was the organist. Dr. Jones, was assisted by Rev. O G V. Tilley, local pastor of Cuthbert Baptist church. The services were most Impressive, largely attended, numerous floral offerings, attesting, in a measure, the very high esteem In which she was held by the people of Cuthbert
Miss Simpson was quite an accomplished musician and for some time,
the organist at the Cuthbert Baptist church, later she hold a similar position with First Baptist church, Abbeville, S. C and for the past two or three years has hold this position in the First Baptist church, Augusta.
Along with Dr. Jones, from Augusta, came Rev. J. F. Eden, former pastor of the Cuthbert church. The Augusta church sent many floral tributes, Miss Simpson was operated on for appendicitis and died Sunday, under the operation.
The death of Miss Stella has brought sorrow to the hearts of many Cuthbert people, where she lived so long and was so highly esteemed. Besides her parents she is survived by two brothers. Mr. Rev Simpson. of this city. and Mr. Charlie Simpson. of Troy, Ala., also by one sister, Mrs. Arthur Foster, of Troy, Ala.

JUDGE CHASTAIN IS DEAD AT CUTHBERT
CUTHBERT Ga.. July 16.—Judge L. S, Chastain, a well-known citizen and attorney of this city, died this morning. He had been In feeble health for several months, as a result of some kidney trouble, but his last Illness was only about a week in duration.Cuthbert has been the home of Judge Chastain since his early boyhood, his life being given to the profession of law. He was former Judge of the county court of this county, when it was in existence, and has held the office of Justice of the peace in the Cuthbert district for a number of years and held this position at the time of his death.
He was a member of the Methodist church and at times held official position as steward in the same. He was also an active member and officer in the local Masonic Lodge, as well as a member and former officer In the local Knights of Pythias Lodge. Both of these organizations he has represented In the Grand Lodges.
He is survived by his wife and an adopted daughter; as well as one brother, Mr. J. W. Chastain, of Montgomery, Ala., and his sisters Mesdames J. W. Mattox, of Atlanta, F. L. Wisdom of Texarkana, Ark,, J. E. Aderhold, of Mobile, Ala, and A. O Browne, of Texarkana.

PROMINENT CUTHBERT MAN DIES IN ALABAMA
CUTHBERT, Ga, April 18.—G. D. Webb, one of Cuthbert's elderly and well-known citizens, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E. C. Dunn, in Andalusia, Ala., yesterday afternoon where he had gone several weeks since, with the hope of recuperating. His remains were brought to Cuthbert today and the funeral services were held at the Methodist Church, of which he was an officer and almost a life-long member. Several months ago Mr. Webb fell from the steps of his residence, sustaining a fracture of one of his limbs. From the effects of this he never recovered,
Mr. Webb came to Cuthbert from Damascus, Early County, several years since. Since coming to  Cuthbert he has been engaged hi the mercantile and fertilizer business.
He was a steward in the Methodist Church and held the position of city treasurer. The officers of the Methodist Church, the mayor and council and other city officials acted as the active and honorary pall bearers.



Augusta Chronicle – 22 Jan. 1903
Griffin, Ga., Jan. 21. – James P. Sawtell, former editor and publisher of the Griffin Morning Call, died here today. Mr. Sawtell was born in Athens, Tenn., in 1829. For many years he was editor of the Cuthbert (Ga.) Appeal. He was owner and editor of the Chattanooga (Tenn.) Democrat many years ago, but for the last twelve or fifteen years has been editor and publisher of the Griffin Call. He was a Confederate soldier.
