Capt. B. F. Davis Dies Suddenly
Honored Citizen of
Stewart County – Commanded 10th Georgia Company
Columbus relatives
received the sad news yesterday of the death of Captain B. F. Davis,
which occurred at ten o’clock Wednesday night at his home at Renfroe,
Georgia. While he has been in ill health for some time his death
was sudden and unexpected.
Captain Davis was one of
the most prominent citizens of Steward County and was well known
through this section of the state. He was born at Salem, Atlanta,
in 1838 and moved to Stewart County after spending his boyhood days in
Alabama. When the war began he enlisted and was elected captain
of Company C of the Tenth Georgia Regiment. After serving through
the war he returned to Renfroe and spent the remainder of his life in
that community, devoting his time to his farming interests. He
married to Miss Emma P. McLester in October, 1870. He was a
member of the Missionary Baptist Church.
In 1878 Captain Davis
represented Stewart County in the Georgia Legislature.
He is survived by his
wife and eight sons and one daughter, as follows:
Mr. Cranford Davis, of
Omaha, Georgia
Mr. Frank Davis, of Rome,
Georgia
Mr. Grover Davis, of
Columbus, Georgia
Mr. Hershel Davis, of
Lumpkin, Georgia
Messrs, Will, Charley,
Lawrence and Dawson Davis, and Miss Maude Davis, of Renfroe, Georgia.
The deceased was highly
esteemed by those who knew him, and his death has caused sadness
throughout the Renfroe community.
The remains were carried
to Richland, Georgia, where the funeral took place at 4:30 o’clock
yesterday afternoon.
