County, GA Obituaries
STEPHENS --- Harry Stephens died of typhoid pneumonia at
Liberty Hall, on the morning of the 21st of January, 1881. For nearly
thirty years he was the faithful body servant of Hon. Alexander H.
Stephens. During the last few years he was the major domo of the
establishment. He was "clear in his office." Former visitors there will
sadly miss hereafter his familiarly face and cordial greeting, and kind
attention. He was, perhaps, more widely known and more high respected
by all classes and conditions than any other person of his race in the
state.
When a slave he was obedient, trustworthy and
faithful; as a freedman he was orderly, industrious, respectful in
demeanor, and blameless in conduct. He leaves and unencumbered estate
of more than twenty thousand dollars, acquired by the practice of
industry, frugality, probity and intelligent judgment in adapting his
means to his ends.
His devotion to his former master at all times and
under all circumstances, alike, when slave or freedman, was at once
exceptional and beautiful. It had all the warmth and tenderness of rare
filial piety. Many will read the announcement of this
humble colored man's death with the sincerest sorrow.- J.D. Waddell
