THE CREATION OF TURNER COUNTY
By an Act of the Georgia Legislature and by a two-third vote of the
people, the Constitution of Georgia was so amended that new counties
could be created. Turner County was the first county created under the
new law. Turner County was taken from Wilcox, Irwin, Dooly, and Worth,
and Ashburn named as the county site and began to function as a
separate county in 1906. Turner County was named in honor of Henry G.
Turner.
Congressional Districts.
Turner County was in the Second Congressional District from January
1,1906, until August 19,1911. (Acts 1905, page 63). From August 19,
1911, until the present time in Third Con-gressional District. (Acts
1911, page 146).

Turner County was from August 18, 1906, until November 5,1918, in the
Tenth Senatorial District. Then from November 5, 1918, until the

of Ashburn and to establish a County Court and recommended that W. A.
Hawkins be appointed judge at a salary of $400.00 per annum.
That bonds be issued to build a court-house and jail and not to exceed
$60,000. The present site was selected and the present court-house and
jail were completed in 1907.

Unveiling of Pate Memorial.
The life of William Pate, Revolutionary soldier, patriot and pioneer
preacher, was memorialized Sunday afternoon, January 20, 1927, when a
beautiful stone erected near Amboy to his memory under the auspices of
the Knox Conway Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution was
unveiled with impressive exercises.
These exercises brought to a beautiful culmination one of the notable
projects this patriotic body has undertaken since their organization
two years ago. One of their aims is to seek out and do honor to the
Revolutionary heroes, where no honor has been given. Early in their
organization, they found the grave of William Pate, where he had been
buried years ago. The spot at that time was an important one, on a
prominent highway, but as years passed by, and the country built up,
the land passed into other hands, and the spot had naturally been
neglected.
Mrs. J. A. Ewing, regent of the chairman, and Mrs. L. W. Green,
chairman of marking historic spots, have labored unselfishly and
unceasingly at this work from beginning to end. The government at their
request sent a marker, while relatives contributed and erected a
beautiful granite monument to memorialize their departed kinsman.
The appropriate and touching exercises were largely attended by people
from Turner and adjoining counties with the following exercises:
Invocation—Mrs- Ola Jackson, Chaplain.
Song—Star Spangled Banner, led by Mrs. Annelle Murphy.
Taps—Russell Hudson.
Unveiling by Misses Vara and Erline Pate, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. S.
E. Pate and Mr. and Mrs. Bennett Pate and Masters Pate Williams and
Harold Williams, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Williams of Cordele.
We have kept the faith—Mrs. John A. Ewing, Regent.
An appreciation—Mrs. L. W. Green, Chairman of Marking Historic Spots.
Address—Rev. John Ben Pate.
Song—America.
Benediction—Mrs. K. P. Baker.
