BRACKETT, HANNAH
Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock this afternoon from the Moon
chapel for Mrs. Hannah Brackett, whose death occurred here Monday night.
Known throughout Bonner county as a pioneer restaurant operator, Mrs.
Brackett was a resident of this district since 1906 coming here from
Calumet, Mich. Her first business venture in Sandpoint was the
Lumbermen's cafe, which was located near Springer's barbershop. Later
she opened what was known as Jim's cafe, which she operated for several
years. In recent years she has had the Green Leaf Cafe on First Avenue.
Until but a few years ago, when her health began to fail, Mrs. Brackett
did much of the restaurant work. Last summer she took an extended
vacation motoring through many parts of the United States, including
her home state Michigan, hoping that the rest would help her to regain
her health. Her husband, W. W. Brackett died several years ago.
She is survived by two daughters, Helen, Sandpoint, and Mrs. Hattie
Nestor, Seattle, Wash.; three sons, William A. Reini, Quincy, Wash.;
Heino Reini, New York City; Edward, Sandpoint. Interment was in
Lakeview Cemetery.

COUGHLIN, FRED
SANDPOINT, Idaho, Sept. 30 - Funeral services for Fred Couglin, 30,
Clark Fork, who shot himself in the head Monday near Bonners Ferry,
Idaho, will be held tomorrow at Clark Fork, with burial in the Clark
Fork cemetery.
Surviving are the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Coughlin; two brothers,
Bob and Jerry Coughlin, all of Clark Fork, and a sister, Mrs. Phyllis
Wrotenbery of Texas.

CULVER, FRANK C.
Northern Idaho Lumberman Dies
Frank C. Culver Founded Sandpoint Company With Brother in 1900
SANDPOINT, Idaho, Sept. 19 -- Frank Clifford Culver, pioneer lumberman
and stock raiser of the Idaho panhandle and western Montana, died at
his home here last night from a heart attack. He had been in ill health
for the last two years.
Culver came west from Pontiac, Mich., with his late brother, Howard
Culver, in 1900 and established the Sandpoint Lumber and Pole company,
with mills here and at Troy, Mont.
The widow, Mrs. Julia Culver, survives.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday from Moon's chapel, with the Rev. Frank L. Tiffany officiating.

DEMPSEY, ROY L. Roy Linn Dempsey was born October 2, 1903 at Whitefish, Montana, and
came to the Priest River district in 1935. Due to a bad heart he was
forced to do only light physical work and for some years he was time
keeper for Con Wear, and also spent part of his time as a trapper. He
was a artist and did some commercial art work.
He passed away quietly in his sleep Tuesday, April 1 at the home of his
brother, Fay Dempsey at Hooper. He is survived by another brother Ray
in Michigan and by his daughter, Betty Jean, in Portland.
Funeral services were held on Monday, April 7 at 2 p.m. at the Moon
Mortuary with Rev. W. C. Lyon in charge. Burial was in the Priest River
Cemetery.

HANEY, PHOEBE MARIA
Pioneer Passes
Bonner county lost another of its pioneers Sunday in the death of Mrs.
Phoebe Maria Haney, 69, who passed away at her home following a year's
illness. She had made her home in Bonner county for the past 29 years.
Surviving besides her widower, Orlando Haney, are four daughters, Mrs.
Albert Rosemond, Wilbur, Wash.; Mrs. Peter Gerry, Mrs. Isabel Robar and
Mrs. John Doyle of Sandpoint; two sons, Lee and Roy Decker, both of
Sandpoint; and her mother, Mrs. Mary Thompson Samuels.

HARTT, GERALD (JERRY) A funeral for Gerald "Jerry" Hartt of Priest River was held Jan. 6 at the Free Methodist Church in Priest
River. The Reverends Marlow Thompson and Palmer Wharton officiated.
Burial followed at Evergreen Cemetery. Hartt, 53 died of natural causes at Newport Community Hospital Jan. 2. He
was born May 31, 1933, in Rawlins, Wyo. He was the son of John and Frances Hartt and came to Priest River in 1939.
He served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War and was an Employee at Louisiana-Pacific lumber mill. He would
have retired in May, 1987. Surviving him are his wife, Patsy at home; a son, Gerald W. in Priest River; four daughters,
Clouie Greenway of Chelan, Carol Elmer of Spokane, Andy Elmer of Priest River, and Claudia Hartt of Seattle; his
mother, Frances J. Hartt, Priest River; two brothers, Frank and William of Priest River; a sister, Shirley Lindell
Iowa; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Arrangements were made by Sherman Funeral Home.

HOSKINS, KEVIN Service for Kevin Hoskins, 15, was Wednesday at Clark Fork (Idaho)
Lutheran Church, where he was a member. Burial followed at Clark Fork
Cemetery with Coffelt Funeral Service of Sandpoint in charge of
arrangements.
He was killed Nov. 14 in a canoe accident on the Clark Fork River. His body was recovered Monday.
The son of Gordon and Nora Hoskins, he was born Nov. 29, 1967, in Sandpoint and was a sophomore at Clark Fork High School.
Survivors include his parents, at the home in Clark Fork, two sisters,
Gayle Pringle and Glenda Hoskins, both of Clark Fork; one brother, Greg
Hoskins of Clark Fork; and his grandmothers, Lillian Hoskins and Ada
Rounsville, both of Clark Fork.

JOHNSON, CARL P.
Bonner County Pioneer Taken
SANDPOINT, April 19 - One of Bonner county's real pioneers was summoned
by death here early Wednesday morning, when Carl P. Johnson, 80, died
following an illness of four years.
A native of Sweden, Johnson came to Wisconsin in 1886 and located in
Sandpoint in 1893. He prospected for ore in the early days and later
followed farming and work in the lumber industry. For many years he was
an employee of the Humbird Lumber company.
Besides his widow he is survived by a son, Oscar.

LEACH, JESSIE MAY
Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon, Oct. 13, at 4 o'clock
at the Moon chapel for Mrs. Jessie May Leach, 58, who was instantly
killed Sunday afternoon in an auto accident near Colburn. Rev. Ivan
Brown will officiate with interment being made at Lakeview cemetery
near her son.
Mrs. Leach was born in Milbank, SD. She came to Bonner County, with her
family about 43 years ago and for several years they resided on south
Third, later moving to Ione, Wash.
Surviving Mrs. Leach are her husband, Cloyd Robert Leach at the home in
Ione, two sons, Cloyd E., Ione, and Clyde of Spokane; four daughters,
Mrs. K. Ingrahm, Naples, Idaho; Ms. Clare Darrow, Kelso, Wash.; Mrs.
Home Hustead, Klamath Falls, Ore.; and Miss Illa-Rae Leach at the
family home, Ione. A sister, Mrs. Bessie Thornton, resides at Priest
River. There are also three brothers surviving.

MARINE, GEORGE WALTER
George Walter "Buz" Marine of the Selle area died March 18
in Kootenai Memorial Hospital at age 60. Memorial Services will be held
at 4 PM Monday, March 21, at the Moon Chapel. Mr. Marine was born March
8, 1923 in Santa Monica, CA, the son of the late George and Helen
Marine. He served in the armed forces during World War II. He was
married to Dione Bonge in October 1953, and the couple lived in Santa
Monica. Mr. Marine worked for the Los Angeles Fire Department until he
retired to the Selle area in 1977.
He is survived by his wife, Dione Marine of Sandpoint; three sons,
Scott Marine of Fernley, NV, and Kirk Marine and Craig Marine, both of
Sandpoint; three daughters, Tracy Reed of Fernley, NV, and Melanie
Marine and Cindy Bayne, both of Sandpoint; one sister, Helen Marron of
Shelton, WA; and nine grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

MATTICE, IRA ALLEN Funeral services for Ira Allen Mattice, 79, who died
Tuesday in the Robert Pederson home in Colburn, will be held at 3 p.m.
today (Thursday) in the Moon Funeral Home with the Fraternal Order of
Eagles officiating. Burial will be made in Pinecrest Cemetery.
Mattice, who was born in Peterburg, Ontario, Canada, on June 19, 1879,
came to Sandpoint 33 years ago from Island City, Ore. He had been
a woodsworker.
Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Lilly Mattice, Colburn; three
daughters, Mrs. Robert Pederson, Colburn; Mrs. Harold Scott, Longview,
Wash.; Mrs. Alfred Regetz, of Ypsilanti, Mich.; and eight grandchildren.

MATTICE, LILY
Funeral services will be held Friday, April 5, at 2 p.m.
in the First Lutheran Church, for Lily Mattice, 72, who died Tuesday,
April 2, at her home at Colburn. Pastor Taylor will officiate and
burial will be in Pinecrest.
Mrs. Mattice was born June 14, 1890 in Iceland. She married Ira Mattice
in 1912 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and they came to Sandpoint in
1926. She was a member of the Lutheran Church. Her husband, Ira, preceded her in death in 1948. For the past four
years she had been residing with her daughter, Mrs. Mae Scott, at
Longview, Wash.
Survivors include another daughter, Mrs. Lilly Pedersen of Colburn,
with whom she was visiting at the time of her death; two sisters, Stena
Van Sickle of Seattle and Borga Isberg in Canada; eight grandchildren
and two great grandchildren. The family requests that memorials be made to the Lutheran Church building fund.

McCLURG, FRANCES
CLARKS FORK -- Funeral services were held at the church Thursday
afternoon for Mrs. Frances McClurg who died at her home Tuesday at 9:30
pm following a long illness. Rev. Morton of Sandpoint delivered a very
sincere and sympathetic funeral sermon and the body was laid to rest in
the Clarksfork cemetery.
Mrs. McClurg was born in Pennsylvania March 14, 1845 and was married to
James McClurg April 30, 1903, at Butte, Neb. Mr. and Mrs. McClurg came
to Idaho and homesteaded at Dorite in 1906, living there until they
came to Clarksfork in 1920.
Mrs. McClurg is survived by her husband, James McClurg, three
daughters, Mrs. Ed Ryan of Clarksfork, Mrs. Charlotte Giles of Anoka,
Minn., and Esther Erickson of Beltramie, Minn.; three sons, Lee Harlowe
and Alf Bailey, both of Seattle and James Bailey of Hope, B. C., as
well as a good many grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is also
survived by Ollie B. McClurg, a stepson, who now lives at Valley,
Wash., but for many years farmed east of Clarksfork. Mr. McClurg Jr
came for the funeral services.

MORRELL, MRS. WILLIE E.
SANDPOINT, Idaho, April 18 - Funeral services for Mrs. Willie E.
Morrell, 90, will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. from the Moon funeral
chapel, with the Rev. Wesley Fisher of the Baptist church officiating.
Mrs. Morrell, who was born in Knoxville, Tenn., died Monday at the home
of her daughter, Mrs. Audrey Terry, her only survivor. She came to this
area from California in about 1944 and resided in
Naples until two and half years ago, when she came to Sandpoint. She
was a member of the Baptist church here. Burial will be in Pinecrest
Cemetery.

ROUNSVILLE, ALVIN HARVEY
Memorial service for Alvin Harvey Rounsville, 68, will be at 1 p.m.
today at Coffelt Funeral Chapel in Sandpoint. Mr. Rounsville, who was
born in Coon Rapids, Minn., died Thursday.
He grew up in the Hope/Clark Fork area. He served as a radio equipment
repairman with the Army during the Korean and Vietnam wars. Mr.
Rounsville retired from the military after 21 years and settled in
California. He worked for the Postal Service. In 1976 he moved to
Spokane and then lived in Troy, Mont., for several years before
returning to Clark Fork in 1997. Mr. Rounsville was active with the
Clark Fork Senior Center.
Survivors include three daughters, Julie Russell, Brenda Radulovich and
Laurie Lane, all of California; five brothers, Harold Rounsville of
Clark Fork, Charley Rounsville of North Dakota, Jim Rounsville of
Bremerton, George Rounsville of Post Falls and Dale Rounsville of
Spokane; six sisters, Charlotte Stangle of Salem, Ore., Minnie Erickson
of Wyoming, Lillian Pugh of Spirit Lake, Idaho, Betty Gibson of Athol,
Idaho, and Laverna Lee and Doris Wells, both of Spokane; and nine
grandchildren.

ROUNSVILLE, GRACE
Memorial Mass for Grace Rounsville, 77, was Tuesday at 11 a.m. at
Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Clark Fork. Coffelt Funeral Service in
Sandpoint was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Rounsville, who was born in Colorado, died Saturday. She had lived
in Colorado and Tacoma before moving to Clark Fork. Mrs. Rounsville had
worked at logging sites in North Idaho and Montana and participated in
Clark Fork community affairs. She was a member of the Sacred Heart
Catholic Church and was active in the Ladies' Guild.
Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Harold; a daughter, Norma
Dettweiler of Columbia Falls, Mont.; a son, Rick Rounsville of Clark
Fork; two sisters, Vera Miller of Colorado and Ruth Holmes of
Toppenish, Wash.; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

ROUNSVILLE, HAROLD
Service for Harold "Harry" Rounsville, 85, will be Monday at 1 p.m. at
Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Clark Fork, Idaho. Private burial will
be at Clark Fork Cemetery. Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint is in
charge of arrangements.
Mr. Rounsville, who was born in Anoka, Minn., died Monday. He moved to
Clark Fork with his family in 1928 and graduated from high school there
in 1937. Mr. Rounsville worked in the mines at Clark Fork, and in 1942
married Grace Garrison. He served overseas with the Army's 334th
Special Service Engineers in
Iran, France and Germany during World War II before returning to Clark
Fork. Mr. Rounsville resumed working as a miner in Clark Fork and at
the Hope
Silver and Lead Mines, and the White Delf Silver and Lead Mine. He did
a lot of contract, and shaft and tunnel work. After the mines closed in
the late 1950s he began doing contract work
in the timber industry and also worked for the Idaho Highway Department
for several years before retiring in 1984. Mr. Rounsville enjoyed
picking huckleberries, fishing and hunting. His wife died in 1998.
Survivors include two children, Norma Dettwiler of Columbia Falls,
Mont., and Richard "Rick" Rounsville of Clark Fork; and five
grandchildren.

SOLBERG, TOM
SANDPOINT, Idaho, March 7 -- Death claimed Thomas Solberg, 69, pioneer
resident of this city this morning following several weeks' illness.
Mr. Solberg came to the United States from Norway, and in 1883 entered
the employ of the Humbird Lumber company. In 1905 he was promoted to
plant superintendent and remained in this capacity until 1930, when he
suffered a stroke. He was a pioneer Mason in the local lodge.
He is survived by his widow, Martha; three sons, Arthur, Pearl and
Melvin; a daughter, Mrs. Arvid Hawkinson, and a brother, Andrew.
Funeral arrangements are pending.

VERBACK, EMMA
SANDPOINT, Idaho, Oct. 29 -- Funeral services were held this afternoon
for Mrs. Emma Verback, 59, who died at her home yesterday morning
following a long illness. Mrs. Verback, a pioneer resident here, came
to Sandpoint 25 years ago from Kansas with her husband, who died
several years ago. She is survived by two children, a son, Leonard, at
McCloud, Cal., and a daughter, Mrs. Don Miller, Kootenai; two sisters,
Mrs. Robert Black and Mrs. B. Bellamy; and by two brothers, G. L.
Shawver, Kootenai, and J. N. Shawver, Picton, Wash.

WILSON, PHOEBE
Funeral services were held this afternoon from the Turnbull chapel for
Mrs. Phoebe Wilson, 78, who died yesterday at the family home at Hope.
Coming to Hope 29 years ago, Mrs. Wilson was well known in the
community. She was a member of the Eastern Star lodge here. She is
survived by her husband, Ambrose; a daughter, Mrs. Maude Black, Boston;
and four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and one
great-great-grandchild.
